N.C. State’s student yearboook, the Agromeck, edited by Mary Beth Hamrick, and its literary and arts magazine, Windhover, were recognized with a Gold Crown Award from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association this spring.

“This award indicates that your publication ranks among the best in student journalism,” said Edmund Sullivan, executive director of CSPA.

A total of 1,771 newspapers, magazines and yearbooks published during the 2007-2008 academic year were eligible for judging in the 2009 Crown Awards Program. Crown awards will be presented to 34 magazines, 54 newspapers and 44 yearbooks. Collegiate Crown Award finalists will be presented during the College Media Convention at the CSPA Award ceremony on March 15 at the Marriott Marquis in New York, N.Y.

This will be the second time the Windhover literary and arts magazine has received a national CSPA award. The 2007 edition received a Gold Crown Award. The 2004 Agromeckyearbook received N.C. State’s first national Crown award for any publication. The 2007Agromeck yearbook received a Silver Crown Award. The fall 2005 and spring 2006Technician newspapers both received Silver Crown awards.

Thirteen college magazines were nominated for Crown awards, including the magazines at East Carolina University and the University of North Carolina – Charlotte in North Carolina. North Carolina had three finalists, more than any other single state. Joe Wright andHannah Richardson ware the co-editors of the 2008 edition. Other staff members included designers Joana Balasa, Elena Bondar, Nicole Kraieski and Becca Mayfield. The book was printed by Theo Davis Printing of Raleigh.

“The Windhover consistently ranks as one of the top publications in the nation,” said adviser Bradley Wilson. “The 2008 edition was consistently good from cover to cover. The staff worked hard to work on the design as well as the printed and audio-visual content.”

Nine college yearbooks were nominated for Crown awards, none other than the Agromeckin North Carolina. Mary Beth Hamrick was the editor of the 2008 edition. Other senior staff members included Managing Editor John Cooper Elias, Design Editor Bryant Robbins, Photo Editor Stephen Bateman. The book was printed by Taylor Publishing of Dallas, represented by Patrick Hunter.

The Crown Awards are considered at Columbia by panels of invited judges, working in small groups to review each publication. During Crown consideration, publications are judged on their excellence as shown by their design, photography, concept, coverage and writing. Crown Awards summarize overall excellence in the entire publication and function as a “top-down” view of general excellence.

“While sales of the yearbook continue to decline, we have begun to consistently produce one of the best books in the nation,” said Wilson, also adviser to the yearbook. “I hope the students, faculty and staff will realize the value of this historical record and keep it alive. The yearbook is one of the first resources historians turn to when trying to get a reflection of the year.”

For the second time, the Agromeck yearbook received a Pacemaker award from the Associated Collegiate Press, one of only seven books in the nation to receive that organization’s highest honors. The 2008 edition of the book was named Best of Show at the national convention in Kansas City. In addition, the 88.1 Second of Technician podcast produced in cooperation with WKNC radio was given third place for Best of Show for Audio Podcast.

At the national convention of the Associated Collegiate Press, College Media Advisers and College Broadcasters, Inc. in Kansas City. Oct 29 – Nov. 2, the NCSU Student Media received national recognition and students attending the conference did everything from participate in critiques to teach sessions.

“It is so much fun to go to national conventions with students from top programs all around the nation,” media adviser Bradley Wilson said. “Our students stayed up well past midnight critiquing pages and having pages from our publications critiqued. It was a great learning experience.”

This year, the NCSU yearbook editor, John Cooper Elias, helped to teach two sessions directly. And media advisers Bradley Wilson and Jamie Lynn Gilbert taught numerous sessions.

“These conventions can be grueling,” Wilson said. “They are a lot of work. But visiting with the students and seeing how they apply what they learned is exciting.”

Yearbook receives national Pacemaker

The 2007 Agromeck yearbook was one of seven college/university books to receive the national Pacemaker, the highest award given by the Associated Collegiate Press.

The last, and first, time the Agromeck received a Pacemaker was for the 2004 edition, the publication’s first national award. The 2006 edition was one of 13 finalists for the national award.

2008 Yearbook named Best in Show

The 2008 edition of the Agromeck yearbook, edited by Mary Beth Hamrick, received the first place Best of Show trophy for books with 300 or fewer pages at the national convention. This is the second consecutive year theAgromeck yearbook has been named Best of Show.

N.C. State’s student yearboook, the Agromeck, and its literary and arts magazine, Windhover, were recognized with Crown awards from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association at the CSPA convention in New York City, March 16.

“This award indicates that your publication ranks among the best in student journalism,” said Edmund Sullivan, executive director of CSPA.

Of the 1,888 current CSPA members eligible to enter the Crown Awards, 1,355 magazines, newspapers and yearbooks actually submitted copies for this particular judging. Publications were judged on writing/editing, design, concept, photography, art and graphics.

Five newspapers, six magazines, and two yearbooks received Gold Crown Awards while 18 other collegiate publications received the second highest CSPA award, known as the Silver Crown. Gold Crowns have been presented annually since 1982, and Silver Crowns have been given since 1984.

This is the first time the Windhover literary and arts magazine has received a national CSPA award. The 2004 Agromeck yearbook received N.C. State’s first national Crown award for any publication. The fall 2005 and spring 2006 Technician newspapers both received Silver Crown awards.

Twelve college magazines were nominated for Crown awards, none other than theWindhover in North Carolina. Lauren Gould was the editor of the 2007 edition. Other staff members included designers Libbi Levi, Paul Venuto, Joshua Smith and Becca Mayfield; Literary Editor Minori Sanchiz, Music Editor Joel Mikkelsen, readers Alison Harmon and Victoria Renz. The book was printed by Theo Davis Printing of Raleigh.

“The Windhover consistently ranks as one of the top publications in the nation,” said adviser Bradley Wilson. “The 2007 edition was spectacular not only in terms of its design, but in terms of its content. And how good it was became evident when they disappeared so fast during distribution. It’s an awesome magazine from cover to cover.”
