The two duked it out in a long, dramatic battle. "Kate whooped my butt because she has such great color guard skills. I wasn't prepared to defend against such an onslaught," Finegan said.

The emotion captured on the subject’s face is a great example of waiting for the right moment to make a technically good, but boring, photo exciting and unique.

Kevin Wright, an alumnus who now works for University Theatre, does a sound check before a rehearsal of University Theatre's production of Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night" in Stewart Theatre Sept 28. The console, a Yamaha M7 usually resides in Thompson Hall (University Theatre's home), but is brought to Stewart for University Theatre musicals, which are usually larger in scale and require more seating, as well as backstage and acting areas. "This console is awesome," Wright said. "It's got a lot of really great features." "Twelfth Night," which is directed by University Theatre Director John McIlwee, runs Sept. 30 through Sunday, Oct. 3 in Stewart Theatre. Student tickets were $5 and could be purchased at Ticket Central in Talley Student Center, by phone, or online.

Kevin’s photo, of the sound booth, which ran in the Technician Sept. 29, is an excellent example of getting a behind the scenes shot. The assignment was to shoot a play that was going on on-campus. Most people often forget about all the work that goes into a play behind the scenes the actors. Also, Cook utilized the rule of thirds and an interesting angle. Usually tilted angles don’t work well with most photos, but because of the angle of the person in the photo, the tilted look works well.

Sam Holmes, a senior in industrial design, juggles pins as part of CircusSpark during the 5th annual SparkCon Sept. 18 in downtown Raleigh. Holmes heard about SparkCon from a design letters, his roommates, and his family. "I like CircusSPARK," Holmes said. "I like to pick up and juggle stuff." In between shows, people were able to juggle, hula-hoop and play in a drum circle.

Luis’ photo, taken in downtown Raleigh during SparkCon, gave Technician readers a glimpse of student involvement in the local community, off campus. Because it was shot from an odd angle near the ground, different people and buildings are layered, filling the frame, and this creativity makes it stands out from average photos that shot from the eye-level that people are already used to seeing the world from. The preparations that led up to the second that the photo was taken helped Luis capture a fun moment in a way that clearly conveys the playful atmosphere of the event. Luis’s photo ran in the Technician Sept. 20.

Adam Whisnant, an alumnus, shows a bug to a child at BugFest, his seventh time at the event. Whisnant, who majored in zoology, chemistry and biochemistry, said he enjoys working at the lepidoptera table -- the butterflies and moths. "It's the easiest way to get people in, and people are drawn to a butterfly's beauty," he said. "It shows people not all insects are gross or bad."

The boy in the photo is engaged with the bug, but you can also see that Whisnant has other bugs in the background. The photo leads the eye around the photo to get a good understanding of what happened at Bugfest.

Taylor Nunn, a senior in business administration, and Adison Plyler, a senior in turf grass management, shotgun beers during pre-game tailgating for the N.C. State vs. Western Carolina football game Sept. 4. "We're out here tailgating every game," Nunn and Plyler said. "We've been out here since 1pm." Tailgating lots open five hours prior to kickoff for each home game."

Tailgating is frequently seen as a vital part of the “college experience” and his work displays this event for readers of Technician. Because of the angle, the bright blue sky provides a clean backdrop for the subjects and the bright sunlight allowed him to shoot with a fast shutter speed, resulting in a sharply-focused, clear photo.

Johari Jordan, doctoral student in food science and a graduate research assistant in food, bioprocessing & nutrition sciences, examines poultry eggs in a lab Aug. 30. The recent salmonella outbreak raised concerns about tainted poultry products. "They should track it back to the origin," Jordan said.

Josh’s photo, which ran in the Technician Aug. 31, is an excellent example of taking initiative of a photo assignment that did not have a lot of direction. The focus of the photo is clearly the eggs, which is important, because the photo could have easily been on the lab assistant. The photo also depicts the issue of the eggs being studied, which related to the article.

Getting her blood drawn, Susan Cho, senior in business marketing, looks away as an assistant snips a blood pouch at the 500-Pint Blood Drive in Carmichael Gymnasium Aug 20. Cho, who had never given blood before was slightly apprehensive when the employees had difficulty finding her vein. "Everyone was really nice," said Cho. "They all talked me through the process."

Jordan’s photo, which ran in the Technician Monday, Aug. 23, was chosen because of his interesting use of selective focus and low depth of field. Photographers have shot blood donation events over and over again, but Jordan thought about the photo from a different angle and made it stand out from the others that have been taken. The photo shows the interaction between the doctor and patient and focuses on the blood donation itself, without hiding the typical focus point — Cho’s face. Overall, the photo proves that there is always room for creativity, even in repetitive assignments.
