Internship Program

Hiring students as interns is one of the most successful recruiting strategies you can use to cultivate future full-time hires. Provide meaningful internships for students and you are certain to create positive "buzz" at NC State!

Creating the internship
Internships may be informal or very structured; there are no requirements from NC State. Successful programs do possess many of the following components:

•  Challenging work assignments.
•  Supportive work environment.
•  Clearly stated expectations for student success.
•  Active supervision and mentoring relationships.
•  Opportunities to interact with other interns.
•  Inclusion in meaningful events and meetings, when possible.
•  An assignment culminating in a presentation made to management.

We will help you get the word out to students about your internship! Use ePACK to post your position, search for resumes, or arrange an on-campus interview. Contact Leslie Bowman, leslie_bowman@ncsu.edu for assistance.

Timing
Recruiting starts in september and continues through spring semester.  We recommend that you start early since some students will accept offers as early as fall semester.

Determining the salary
Intern salaries typically range from $8.00 to 14.00 per hour (non-technical majors), $12.00-22.00 (technical majors). Very few internships are unpaid. The rate you choose will reflect your industry average as well as the profile of the individual student.

Academic credit
Most students participate in internships to gain practical experience and will not need to earn academic credit. There is no universal policy regarding credit for internships at NC State. Policy is made at the departmental level and few majors give academic credit.

Housing
If your organization is located out of town, students will appreciate your assistance. Some employers make corporate apartments available at a reduced rate, while others make arrangements with a local apartment complex or university housing office for short-term leases. In either case, pairing interns together will help to ensure a smooth transition in a new community.

We look forward to helping you launch a successful internship program!
