Informational Interviews
Want to learn first-hand what it's like to work in a specific career?
Wish to gain advice about how to find an internship or job in a specific career?
Talk with a professional who works in the field.
Step 1: find a professional
Ask friends, family, faculty, and classmates, “Do you know anyone who works in the field of civil engineering?" Use UCC databases to help find a professional: ePACK, eLeads, and Career Search.
Step 2: contact a professional
Call or email your contact.
"This is Jim Edwards. I'm a freshman at NC State and thinking about majoring in civil engineering. I found your name in ePACK and know that you hire civil engineers. Would you be available to meet with me at your office so that I can learn what civil engineers actually do?"
"This is Mary Robbins from NC State. You came to my Sports Marketing class this week - and really sparked my interest in this field. I am graduating in May with a degree in Sports Management. Would you be available to meet with me to provide guidance on how to best approach my job search in this field?"
Step 3: conduct the interview
Be professional. Arrive 5-10 minutes early, dress in business casual, bring a list of questions, take paper and pen for notetaking, and bring your enthusiasm!
- What do you do on a typical day?
- Can you tell me about one of your current projects?
- What are your typical hours or work schedule?
- What are the rewards and challenges in this career?
- What training or education is required?
- Is a graduate degree recommended?
- What is a typical salary for someone in this field?
- What personal qualities are important for success in this field?
- What was your career path; what steps did you take to reach this position?
- How did you know what you wanted to do?
- What advice would you give to a student preparing to enter this field?
- When you hire a new graduate, what do you look for?
- Does your company hire summer interns or co-ops?
- Is there anyone else you think I should talk to about civil engineering careers?
Step 4: show your appreciation
Email or send a thank you note within 24 hours. Report back to the professional on anything you pursue as a result of your meeting. They will appreciate knowing their impact.
An informational interview can yield both short- and long-term benefits!
