Letters

"Make it short. Focus on your qualifications for the job vs. the company in general." (GSK)

Cover letters
A cover letter accompanies a resume that is emailed or sent through the U.S. mail. (When emailed, the cover letter can be the email message itself or the attachment.) The most effective cover letter is customized for the position or organization and emphasizes key points of interest to the reader. It should be brief and not exceed one page. A cover letter is not required when you hand a resume to a recruiter at a career fair, presentation, or interview.

Thank you letters
A thank you letter is sent within 24 hours of an interview by email or U.S. mail, when you would like further consideration.  It is your opportunity to show your appreciation, restate sincere interest in the position, and emphasize key strengths and accomplishments. To thank or not to thank?

Getting started

  1. View sample letters
  2. Read the letters section of the job & internship guide
  3. Use the cover letter rubric
  4. Have your letter critiqued by your career counselor
