The 2013 Southeast Regional Fruit and Vegetable Conference will take place January 10-13, 2013, in Savannah, Ga. According to event organizers, it’s the largest educational conference and trade show in the Southeast United States that unites growers, vendors and suppliers.

Anyone with an interest in specialty crop agriculture is invited to be a part of this event to address food safety, specific commodity sessions on production practices and increased yields, marketing strategies and interact with key suppliers and growers.

N.C. Blueberry Growers Survey 2012

The purpose of this survey is to gather information from blueberry growers to assess the impact of mummy berry and green spot diseases on the production of fresh-packed blueberries in North Carolina. The goal is to use this information to better understand these diseases and conduct research aimed at improving the quality and marketability of fresh-packed blueberries. Research is funded in part by a grant from the North Carolina Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services (NCDA&CS). Participation in this survey is voluntary and responses are confidential.

Dr. Allan Brown is leading a multi-institution consortium of scientists to create the first genomic draft sequence of the blueberry. He hopes to use this sequence to identify those genes that impact how the blueberry creates all of the attributes that make it delicious and nutritious. Blueberry and cranberry, for example, are closely related. The compounds that make blueberry “blue” and cranberry “red” may also protect against diabetes and macular degeneration, for example. Dr. Brown is interested in how specific genes differ and how they are regulated.

Dr. Brown also conducts research on broccoli and cabbage.
