The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning
The university standing committee on the Evaluation of Teaching has drafted the following definition of SoTL:
The scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) is a systematic study of teaching and learning that is documented in a public forum and is available for peer review. The goals of SoTL are to enhance student learning and to improve instructional practices in higher education. The scholarship of teaching and learning is distinguishable from scholarly teaching. Scholarly teaching requires knowledge of content and appropriate pedagogy to teach a particular content. All teaching faculty are obligated to be scholarly teachers.
In 1990 a discussion of the scholarship of teaching began.... (ends with) .... in turn, can buinld on our work." Somewhere in there, I would also show that SoTL is how one abbreviates the scholarship of teaching & learning.
Faculty at North Carolina State University are engaged in a variety of scholarly teaching activities and peer-reviewed activities that qualify as the scholarship of teaching and learning. Scholarly teaching is recognized and encouraged through workshops and peer review (hyperlink). The Scholarship of Teaching and learning is supported through our instructional grants program(hyperlink), and through events such as the 2006 SoTL conference and 2005 SoTL showcase.
