On Saturday, May 10, Chancellor James Oblinger conferred more than 4,000 degrees on NC State students during a commencement ceremony focused on recognizing student achievement in the classroom and beyond.

"Our degree has quite a bit of prestige in the marketplace, and our graduates are in high demand," NC State vice provost of enrollment management and services Louis D. Hunt said. "We have a lot of students who have taken full advantages of opportunities here at NC State, not only in the classroom but also outside of the classroom as well.

"They are increasingly engaged in community service, study abroad and other activities that have made them that much more attractive to potential employers."

In total, 3,768 graduates – including a group of 115 valedictorians with perfect 4.0 grade point averages – participated the university's spring commencement activities, held Saturday at the RBC Center in Raleigh.

Erskine Bowles, president of the multi-campus University of North Carolina system and a former White House chief of staff under President Clinton, delivered the commencement address.

In addition to 88 associate's, 2,857 bachelor's, 883 master's, 125 doctoral and 77 doctor of veterinary medicine degrees bestowed on this semester's graduates, Oblinger conferred honorary degrees on former UNC system president C.D. Spangler, award-winning author Pat Mora and business professional Richard Robb.
