On February 2, 2008, NC State University held its 3rd annual Polar Plunge for Special Olympics North Carolina, helping to kick off the N.C. State Police Department’s fundraising efforts for the North Carolina Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics. There were approximately 100 participants, and each "plunger" collected at least $50.00 in donations in exchange for the chance to jump into a frigid Lake Raleigh and take home a "Polar Plunge" t-shirt. Awards were given out for the youngest plunger, the oldest plunger, the best costume, the largest group to plunge and the individual who raised the most money.
