Whether it was her work with NC State Women’s Center or time spent mentoring rural N.C. high school students, the experiences Sara Yasin gained during her years on campus have allowed her to move out of her personal comfort zone and gain increased knowledge of herself and others around her.
“What makes NCSU special is that every person has a unique experience,” said Yasin, a senior Caldwell Fellow double-majoring in international studies and textile and apparel management. “You are the architect of your own undergraduate education at NC State, whether that is the academic aspect or the extracurricular aspect.”
Yasin has received international attention for creating a program entitled “Behind the Veil,” which helps educate non-Muslims about the concept of the veil in Islam.
“What makes my experience extraordinary is that it is my own, and the people around me helped me gain more than an education in books, but I ultimately understand myself and what I want much better,” she said. “NC State has been a great part of my life, and it always will be.” – Dave Pond
