Professor emeritus Dr. J. Lawrence Apple’s relationship with NC State University dates back to 1946, when he entered our academic halls in pursuit of the first of three degrees he would eventually receive on campus.
He served on the faculty from 1955-1991, becoming widely known for his work in international agricultural development, before taking several leadership roles within the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and the Institute of Biological Science, as well as the university’s international programs.
“NC State has been central in my life as a student, as a member of the faculty and as an administrator,” Apple said from his home in Burlington, N.C. “It’s a one-of-a-kind in this state, as an 1862 land grant university, that carries with it a mission that serves a unique role in supporting research and educational objectives in the state of North Carolina.”
Apple is also known for his tireless advocacy for the NC State Libraries, helping to raise funds as the president of the Association of Retired Faculty as well as the Friends of the Library. In 1994, along with his wife, Ella, Sr. Apple established the J. Lawrence and Ella H. Apple Library Endowment. – Dave Pond
