Andrews Doctoral Fellowship
The Andrews Doctoral Fellowship is a prestigious one-year award offered to one top entering doctoral student at NC State University in any discipline. Students admitted to master’s programs leading to the doctorate are also eligible. The Fellowship is funded through an endowment given to the University by the late Mrs. Grace Andrews of Raeford, North Carolina.
Evaluation and Selection
Students may not apply directly for these fellowships. Instead, they must be nominated by their prospective Directors of Graduate Programs, who submit nominations to the Graduate School. Each Director of Graduate Programs is invited to submit one outstanding nominee for the Doctoral Fellowship each year. International students are eligible.
Each completed nomination form must be accompanied by (1) two letters of recommendation (these can be from the Graduate School application), (2) a statement of purpose from the student (this can be from the Graduate School application), and (3) a copy of the nominee's transcripts.
Selections are made by a committee of faculty appointed by the Graduate School.
Stipend and Fellowship Tenure
The Andrews Doctoral Fellowship provides an annual stipend of $21,500, in-state tuition, fees and health insurance. For out-of-state students, the student’s college/graduate program covers tuition remission.
The student’s college/graduate program must continue the student’s funding after the first year of Andrews support with a teaching assistantship, a research assistantship, or a fellowship. The level of continuing support must be equivalent to at least the average of other assistantships/fellowships in the same program. Provided the student makes satisfactory academic progress, the college/graduate program is required to provide two years of such support for students already possessing the master’s degree, and four years for those who do not possess the master’s degree.
