Pillars of Greek Life
Four pillars guide fraternities and sororities at North Carolina State University: Brotherhood & Sisterhood, Scholarship, Leadership, and Service. These fraternal values provide a strong foundation to support a student's personal development during the undergraduate years.
Brotherhood & Sisterhood
A very exciting part of fraternity and sorority life at NC State is the social and recreational opportunities. Through a variety of events we provide opportunities to meet and interact with members of fraternities and sororities and other campus organizations. Some of the ways we balance scholarship with fun are: social events with other chapters, formal dinner dances, philanthropic events, Greek Week, award banquets, alumni get-togethers, sorority exchange dinners, Homecoming, and intramural sporting events. On average, our chapters interact with alumni 3 to 4 times per year, their councils 8 times per year, and chapters of other councils 9 times per year.
Academic excellence is a tradition and priority of the NC State Greek community. First and foremost, members of the NC State Greek community are students. We pride ourselves on academic accomplishments and work hard to maintain high scholarship standards. We help our members excel as students; chapters provide group study sessions and workshops such as test-taking strategies, study skills, time management, and choosing a major. In 2012-2013, 98% of all chapters had an officer elected to support academic achievement and 92% had an academic advisor and/or faculty advisor offering additional support.
NC State's Greek community provides incentives and recognition to its members for academic achievement. The Greek community sponsors academic honor clubs such as the Order of Omega. Members’ achievements are recognized through national and local scholarships, banquets and awards.
Greek Life offers members numerous leadership opportunities within their chapter, such as executive positions and officers.
The Department of Greek Life sponsors programs such as:
- Greek Leaders Retreat
- Presidents Roundtables
- Officer Training
- Support for National and Regional Conferences
- Triangle Greek Leadership Conference
Members of the Greek community at North Carolina State University are involved in numerous other campus activities. In fact, approximately 80% of Greek-affiliated students are involved in outside organizations, many in leadership roles.
Each year, members of the Greek community contribute thousands of hours and dollars to local and national charities. During the 2012-2013 academic year, fraternity men and sorority women volunteered a total of 65,337 hours and hosted 92 events to raise $192,468. That's about 30 hours of community service per member. Events provide friendly competition and social interaction for fraternties and sororoites, for the campus and the surrounding community. More importantly, these events provide opportunities to raise needed funds and assistance for numerous charities. In addition, Chapters have individual projects throughout the year, which involve tutoring/mentoring area youth, collecting food and supplies, and encouraging awareness for a host of different causes.
