Celebrating a Wolfpack Legacy

The Black Alumni Society commemorates history and contributions of African-American students at NC State University.

Alumni ladiesFor three decades, the North Carolina State University Black Alumni Society has helped alumni stay connected – both to each other and to the university. This year, it celebrates its 30th anniversary by bringing former students back to NC State to mingle and network. The happy occasion? Homecoming.

More than Reconnecting

Stephanie Cogdell (1992), current BAS president, says this year's Homecoming is not just about reconnecting – it's also about honoring alumni who have accomplished big things since graduation.

"[It's to] honor past graduates who have represented NC State University in a positive manner, and who have excelled in their careers," Cogdell said. Ten alumni will receive Legacy Awards at a banquet at the Park Alumni Center Thursday night. When it comes to this year's BAS Homecoming festivities, the awards banquet is just the beginning.

Friday morning, Cogdell has reserved 40 tee times at the new Lonnie Poole Golf Course on Centennial Campus – so alums can hit the greens before heading to NC State'a Homecoming parade. Next up is Family Fun Day in the Sankofa Room at the Witherspoon Student Center, featuring face painting, cotton candy and candy apples.

The group will end the day with a Black Alumni Society, NC State Greeks United and Varsity Club social at Raleigh's North Italian Chophouse.

Game day brings another round of fun, beginning with a tailgate event on the East Terrace of the RBC Center. Cogdell says she expects 150-200 alumni to attend, – and afterwards, watch the Homecoming showdown between NC State and Maryland.

The post-game party continues with a Homecoming Bash at Oliver Twist – the event will have live music and will also be open to alums from neighboring universities. Finally, the weekend festivities end Sunday morning with a breakfast at Raleigh's Embassy Suites.

After that?

"We'll start planning for next year," Cogdell said.

The BAS has been part of NC State since 1979, when Elwood and Diane Hill Becton (1973, 1973) (pictured above) founded the group. It later became affiliated with the university's Alumni Association and focused its resources on undergraduate and graduate scholarships, while continuing to help alumni connect and network with each other. The group also helps financially support NC State's African American Cultural Center.

Cogdell said the BAS remains active all year long. Members gather to watch football and basketball games, for example – and this past year, participated in service events like Habitat for Humanity and Wolfpack Day of Service. Even though the alums may not meet face-to-face as often as they'd like, Cogdell said they keep in close contact through social networking sites like Facebook.
