You may earn research or independent study credit for individual or group work performed under faculty supervision. Research is defined as discovery-, inquiry- or creativity-based learning. It may be conducted in a laboratory, art studio, field site, or any setting in which scholarly pursuit of new knowledge occurs.
Study may occur at NC State or elsewhere, so long as it is supervised by
- a member of the faculty at NC State or
- a member of the faculty at another university, or
- someone in government or private industry who is approved by a member of the faculty at NC State.

NCSU Research PackTrack
The NCSU Research PackTrack program is a new initiative designed to provide undergraduate students with hands-on research experience early in their collegiate career. This program is a fantastic opportunity for students in the biological sciences to participate in an original, authentic research experience. Students can enter the program during the second semester of their freshman year (first semester sophomore students may enter with permission). While in the program, students will have the opportunity to gain research skills, conduct guided research in an authentic research lab, and complete an independent research project. Course credit obtained throughout the program can count towards your major.
