Energy

North Carolina has a tremendous opportunity to become a leader among southeastern neighbors in the new energy economy. As part of it’s program of work on energy, IEI will undertake a number of activities this year.

Higher Education

Since the conclusion of IEI’s Business Committee on Higher Education (BCHE), committee members and its chairs, Ann Goodnight of SAS and Bob Ingram of GlaxoSmithKline, have continued efforts to engage leaders statewide and to promote the work of the committee.

IEI GlaxoSmithKline Faculty Fellows

IEI's Faculty Fellows have been busy using their expertise to write opinion pieces on higher education graduates and soft skills, and energy and the environment -- as well as submit comments to the NC Division of Water Quality over proposed rules relating to dam removal and stream restoration in North Carolina.

Online Conversations - Emerging Issues Debate

IEI is launching the first in a series of online debates on crucial challenges facing our state. The format is structured to encourage a broad, informative discussion among experts and stakeholders, with the goal of hearing from several points of view. The result, we believe, will be constructive and thought provoking.

It wasn’t hard to settle on the first topic for our debate, transportation in North Carolina is in crisis. Our existing roads are crumbling, our rapidly growing urban areas lack the new roads necessary to keep up with growth, while the North Carolina Department of Transportation has made a series of well-publicized missteps that have undermined confidence in the agency.

Did You Know?

Following the 2005 Emerging Issues Forum, My Health is Your Business, IEI worked for many months on an evidenced-based healthcare initiative called NC Bestcare.  We mobilized relevant stakeholders and raised $1.2 million from the NC Health and Wellness Trust Fund to support the project.  Eventually, it was merged with a similar initiative launched by the governor's office.
