Note from the Director
Excitement around the 2008 Institute for Emerging Issues Forum continues to build in unprecedented ways as we enter our last week of preparation. As many of you know, the Forum sold out last week – an historic first. This remarkable response to North Carolina’s Energy Futures: Realizing a State of Opportunity demonstrates the eagerness among North Carolinians for meaningful dialogue about our energy prospects.
Update On Programs
2008 GlaxoSmithKline Faculty Fellows Program
IEI is pleased to announce the 2008 class of GlaxoSmithKline Faculty Fellows. In its fourth year, the GSK Faculty Fellowship program builds much needed capacity within North Carolina’s systems of higher education for policy-makers at every level to draw upon, creating champions within policy-making networks for new ideas based on solid research. The University of North Carolina, the North Carolina Community College system and North Carolina’s Independent Colleges and Universities represent crucial assets for the state as it prepares to meet the many challenges of the 21st century.
What Do You Think? Survey Results
Results of IEI Survey Show Support for Educating NC's Immigrants Population
IEI recently posted a short survey on our website to get a sense of what readers felt about the topic of immigration. We were particularly interested to learn what you think given the recent announcement by the North Carolina Community College System (NCCCS) that it will offer in-state tuition to children of undocumented immigrants who graduate from North Carolina high schools. Generally, some argue that increasing access to our state's system of higher education for children of undocumented immigrants will boost our economic competitiveness as we transition to a high-skilled economy. Others argue that incentives such as in-state tuition should be reserved for American citizens. Based on the results of the survey, most of you agree with the former.
What's the Big Idea?
We asked some of our faculty fellows past and present to suggest a big idea for our state to think about in the year ahead.
