When I last wrote to you, we were in the midst of final preparations for the 2008 Institute for Emerging Issues (IEI) Forum North Carolina's Energy Futures: Realizing a State of Opportunity. With more than 1200 of you in attendance, we have been pleased with the feedback on the caliber of speakers, the importance of the themes we explored together and the implications for our state's opportunities in the new energy economy.

Update On Programs

ENERGY - YOUR VIEWS AT THE FORUM

This year, in partnership with the American Research Institute, we were able to ask Forum attendees questions as an integral part of the program. If you were at the Forum, you saw the results instantly. All the questions and answers are also provided on our website.

FINANCING THE FUTURE - THE TAX CALCULATOR

IEI is now focusing its efforts on work with the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners (NCACC), with the Legislative Study Commission on Fiscal Modernization (LSC) and on the work of IEI's Business Committee on Financing the Future (BCFTF).

IEI's work with the NCACC has resulted in the construction of an online tax calculator for every county in the state.

Did You Know?

NCA&T IS A MODEL FOR SOFT SKILL EDUCATION

While addressing workforce needs, IEI's Business Committee on Higher Education concluded that an enduring communication platform must be established by which business can communicate its needs to higher education and then work with higher education to ensure that it is responsive to these needs.

The University Studies program at NC A&T provides students with a core curriculum that encourages inquiry. The program specifically promotes critical thinking, effective written and oral communication, an appreciation for diverse cultures and a commitment to civic engagement.
