Growth: By Chance or Choice?
Our state is changing. We are growing at an unprecedented rate, which may reach 13 million people by 2030. The question before us is whether we want to grow by choice or by chance.
The rate and impacts of growth vary across the state. Even so, our school systems, roads, energy and water supply and, of course, the funding mechanisms for these critical infrastructures are under tremendous strain statewide.

Energy
This summer, IEI is undertaking a number of activities related to its program of work on energy. North Carolina has a tremendous opportunity to become a leader among our southeastern neighbors in the new energy economy.

Read Martin Doyle’s recent opinion piece “Need for fixes can’t be ignored” that ran in the News & Observer and talks about the need to take a hard look at North Carolina’s water and sewer infrastructure.
In other news, Johnny Shull has been appointed to serve on the selection committee for the NC Green Business Fund, designed to provide funding for the development of biofuels, energy efficient buildings (and their components or processes), and environmentally conscious technologies and products from the private sector.
