October Newsletter
Note from the Director
This month marks an important milestone in the history of the Institute for Emerging Issues (IEI). On October 23, we will celebrate the official groundbreaking of our new home: the James B. Hunt, Jr. Library.
The Hunt Library will mean you can expect more from IEI's work, as we offer new space for North Carolinians to explore big ideas for the future while learning about their past successes.
Update On Programs
Energy & Creativity
On Friday, October 9, IEI was awarded the 2009 Outstanding Leadership Award from the North Carolina Sustainable Energy Association (NCSEA) for our role in promoting and supporting sustainable energy in North Carolina.
On September 30, IEI’s Working Group on Creativity met for the first time to discuss and debate the elements that make up a healthy and thriving creative ecosystem. Although many interesting and different ideas came from the discussion, there were a few common themes that were highlighted as essenial components.
Emerging Issues Debate
The Value of the Arts
A few months ago, IEI started a new Emerging Debate on where creativity comes from and how it can be sustained. This month, the debate continues with The Value of the Arts by Mary B. Regan, executive director of the North Carolina Arts Council. Mary discusses how a focus on the arts will improve North Carolina's bottom line.
If you would like to join in on the debate in an upcoming IEI Newsletter, please email us at institute@ncsu.edu.
Did You Know?
We have heard a lot about healthcare reform at the federal level, but it is worth remembering that the state of North Carolina is one of the biggest buyers of healthcare in the state. Check out the breakdown on how North Carolina spends its healthcare dollars.
IEI@Work
As part of its most recent program of work, Creativity, iNC, IEI has been holding focus groups around the state to determine the commonalities and differences among creative communities in North Carolina. In order to capture every aspect of North Carolina’s creative population, IEI held focus groups in the Triad and Charlotte.
