Note from the Director

North Carolina brought about a state sponsored symphony and museum of art in the 1940’s; the Research Triangle Park in 1959; the Community College System and School of the Arts in 1963; and Centennial Campus and the North Carolina Biotech Center in 1984.

Those were some of the Big Ideas of our past, and the payoffs continue to be significant.

At the 25th Annual Emerging Issues Forum in February, IEI will organize concurrent sessions that explore the Big Ideas of our future.

Update On Programs

Growth | Energy | Financing the Future

This summer, IEI partnered with UNC-TV and PBS’s national Blueprint America Initiative to host two community forums and a webinar series over the summer. We are pleased to report that partnership will continue into 2010, as IEI and UNC-TV host a conversation on regional transportation options in the Triangle area in mid-January.

Governor Beverly Perdue recently appointed new members of the North Carolina Energy Policy Council, an entity initially created in the 1970s but reinvigorated through the recent passage of House Bill 1481. IEi's Business Committee on Energy had recommended the council's rejuvenation, and we are pleased to see this come to fruition.

Tax reform is now firmly on the agenda for both chambers of the legislature. The finance committees of the House and the Senate have begun meeting in joint session to wrestle with the details of fundamental reform.

IEI@Work

As part of its most recent program of work, Creativity, iNC, IEI organized two important conversations around creativity in the state. The first was a focus group here at NC State, which explored the creative and innovate ideas taking shape here in our own backyard.

The second was a panel discussion hosted by IEI and the Durham Arts Council on how the Durham community has supported and welcomed artists as part of its culture.
