Note from the Director

As you know, IEI’s work on an issue does not end with our Forum. In moving forward with the work ahead, we must consider how the landscape of our state continues to shift. The federal stimulus package is now a reality, with $6.1 billion dollars slated for North Carolina. Although this puts us on the right path to economic recovery, it is certainly not enough to adequately repair and build our state’s infrastructure to meet our growing needs.

North Carolina's Energy Futures - Business Comittee on Energy

The Institute for Emerging Issues has convened a Business Committee on Energy (BCE) to address the most important recommendations in how the state determines energy policy, given the pressing challenges of population growth and increasing energy demand.

The initial discussions have centered around recommendations for the state to establish leadership, lead through action, coordinate with the state to resolve policy conflicts, improve investment through the state’s financial institutions, create jobs and improve the quality of information.

The Changing Face of North Carolina

The Institute for Emerging Issues (IEI) spent the last year discussing the challenges and opportunities presented by our state’s tremendous growth.  As the fourth fastest growing state in the nation, our population is indeed expanding to unprecedented levels. By 2030, our population will reach 13 million people, and North Carolina will move from the 10th most populous state to the seventh. However, our population is not just growing, but its composition – the very face of North Carolina – is changing drastically.

Did You Know?

The funds allocated to North Carolina in the federal stimulus will not save the state from a drastic downturn in revenues, but it can help prepare North Carolina for long-term recovery. This was the focus of a presentation made by the Institute for Emerging Issues to a joint meeting of the Senate and House Finance committees on Wednesday, February 25.

Faculty Fellows Update

2009 GlaxoSmith Kline Faculty Fellow Rich Cregar has been invited to serve on the North Carolina Department of Commerce’s 2009 Green Business Fund Advisory Committee.  In its second year and through a competitive grant process, the fund supports small and medium-sized North Carolina businesses active in the “green economy.”
