Note from the Director
Just last week, hundreds of visitors from 52 different nations descended on Raleigh for the XXVI International Association of Science Parks World Conference. The Research Triangle Park region played proud host to the conference as it boasted the 50th Anniversary of RTP, which is the largest science park in the world and regarded by many as the most successful.
Kudos to North Carolina. Our state is home to a plethora of organizations which, like the Research Triangle Park, were born of creative thought and buoyed to success by bold leadership. The conference was a great opportunity to showcase some of these organizations and what they have meant for North Carolina’s development. Its very title – Future Knowledge Eco-systems – raised, however, the important question of “What’s the next big bet?”
Update On Programs
Growth & Infrastructure
IEI is pleased to be partnering with UNC-TV in its convening of Community Forums in Fayetteville and the Triad next month. The partnership will merge the efforts of IEI’s program of work on Growth and Infrastructure and PBS’s initiative on America’s aging infrastructure entitled "Blueprint America: Road to the Future."
Emerging Issues Debate
Untraditional Funding for Investments in Our Future
Amidst the most severe economic crisis in our lifetime, investment in safe, reliable, efficient and effective physical infrastructure has forced its way to the forefront as an important option for repairing an ailing economy and securing a prosperous future for North Carolina and the nation. Traditional ways of funding the infrastructure we need will not meet current and future demands.
If you would like to join in on the debate in an upcoming IEI Newsletter, please email us at institute@ncsu.edu.
Did You Know?
Our state faces an extraordinary budget crisis. The projected deficit for the next fiscal year is $4.2 billion. It is little consolation to know that, according to the National Council of State Legislatures, every one else is in the same boat: the combined deficit for all the states is roughly $123 billion.
So what will North Carolina do to set us apart from the 49 other states?
Faculty Fellows Update
IEI’s Faculty Fellows continue to make the news. Last month’s IEI Emerging Debate piece on working caregivers by Warren Wilson College’s Ali Climo was picked up by the Durham Herald-Sun. Climo calls for supports for working caregivers, noting that one in six workers in NC already cares for a family member or friend over age 60. Such responsibilities sap workplace productivity, a situation that will only get worse as the boomer generation retires.
