Changing Landscapes: Building the Good Growth State?

Initial Policy Recommendations

                                          • Leadership retreat participants discussed and debated many policy directions that leaders must develop in order to sustain a renewed vision of North Carolina:

Jurisdictions must have options to develop discreet land use regulations that encourage efficient growth.

Incentive structures must be put into place in order to guide efficient land use and promote collaboration across institutions and jurisdictions.

Innovative financing options, such as public/private partnerships, must be available to fund the increased need for built infrastructure.

Open space must be actively preserved as it is a direct contributor to the high quality for life we have so long enjoyed in North Carolina.

A collective vision supported by thoughtful policies and practices will result in regional action and collaboration through the organic creation of partnerships across city and county lines. This type of collaboration and planning will encourage sustainable community form that will be the foundation for a prosperous future for North Carolina.

IEI will continue to expolore these policy directions in the next steps of its model public policy process.
