Changing Landscapes: Building the Good Growth State?

Working Group Challenge Statements

The first task for Working Group participants was to identify the challenges to our state's infrastructure. The following statements helped to organize the group's thoughts as the moved forward to create their Statements of Direction:

bulletNorth Carolina lacks a clear vision and direction on funding, building and maintaining its infrastructure that is adaptable to social, economic and environmental challenges.

bulletThe way we build can have negative impacts on our natural environment, our quality of life, public health and the proximity of jobs and services to where we live and we lack measures for measuring these impacts.

bulletCurrent financing and budgeting methods do not raise sufficient revenues to satisfy the demand for built infrastructure and existing revenues are not allocated efficiently.

bulletGovernance structures for comprehensive and innovative decision-making and funding for infrastructure development and maintenance are not adequate to address 21st century needs.

bulletNorth Carolinians are not sufficiently informed about the resource constraints facing our infrastructure.

bulletNot all North Carolinians have sufficient access to infrastructure.
