Confucius Class Program

“Confucius Classes”, like “Confucius Institutes”, are also program s s upported by the Confucius Institute Headquarter (or Hanban), which is a non-profit organization with the purpose of enhancing intercultural understanding by sponsoring courses of Chinese language and culture.

The difference between a “Confucius Class”(CC) and a “Confucius Institute” (CI) is that: while a CI usually should be set up in a foreign university or a College through the cooperation of a foreign university (college) and its Chinese partner, a CC can be set up in a primary, middle or high school through the cooperation of foreign school and its Chinese partner.

The two partners may submit an application together directly to “Hanban” or through the local Confucius Institute in that foreign country in order to set a Confucius Class.

If the application has been approved, the host school will get an initial fund (usually $30,000) to establish the Confucius Class, it will also get free books, successive financial support based on its annual budget of projects.

Hanban will also sent teacher(s) to teach Chinese language in the foreign host school. Hanban will pay the basic salary (living stipends) and international transportation fee for those Chinese teachers.

Basic requirement of establish a Confucius Class are:

A. The host school has a substantial demand of opening Chinese language courses or there are already Chinese language courses and want to further enhance these courses.

B. The host school can supply classroom with necessary educational equipment to their students who want to learn Chinese.

C. The host school is also expected to provide free accommodation and local transportation for the Chinese teacher.
