The Confucius Institute is a partnership between NC State University, the Office of Chinese Language Council International under China's Ministry of Education (Hanban), and Nanjing Normal University, and. The Institute' mission is to enhance intercultural understanding by sponsoring activities that provide access to Chinese language and culture for students, staff, faculty, and the community. The Confucius Institute at NC State University will organize and offer several long-term and short-term non-credit bearing courses, seminars, lectures and workshops related to the Chinese language and culture. As the classes will be open to the public, community members within the greater Triangle area will be able to register and attend, as well as students, faculty, and staff from NC State University. In order to carry out our mission, we plan to hire qualified part-time Chinese language and culture instructors and are particularly interested in those who have a special knowledge and skill related to the Chinese culture. Final hiring decisions will be based on instructor qualification, the need and interest of the course within the community, the number of students registered for the course, and the registration fee, which must fall within the average range of typical non-credit course fee held in North Carolina and in the McKimmon center.
The Confucius Institute holds course sessions and seminars at the McKimmon Center located on 1101 Gorman Street , off of Western Blvd in Raleigh , NC ; however, it is also possible to look into other venues (depending on availability, classroom rental fee, and convenience of location).
A course on a particular subject may last as long as a whole semester (ranging from one class per week to three classes per week), or as short as a few sessions, or even just one session. Class times are usually 1½ - 2 hours per session).
Most of the courses provided by Confucius Institute are held in evenings (beginning or after 7 pm) and on weekends (any time of the day).
Instructor payment: Instructors are paid by the hour; typical hourly salary equals about 45% of an individual registration fee. We invite you to suggest a course registration fee based on your experience and recommended payment for your teaching services, and after discussing this with you we shall make the final decision for both payment and registration. Please note that our courses are non-credit, and class fees are based on average non-credit session fees in North Carolina and at the McKimmon Center . Average registration fees per student for a one-semester period range from $130 - $200.
The deadline to submit course and seminar proposals:
Spring semester (classes will begin mid-January, 2008): Nov.30, 2007
Summer semester (classes will begin at the end of May or the beginning of June, 2008): March 30;
Fall semester (Classes will begin around mid-September, 2008): June 30.
