Carolina Silverbell (Halesia tetraptera)
Carolina Silverbell is a deciduous tree that may grow 20 to 35 feet tall. The leaves are alternate with a toothed margin and hairy underside. The bark is red-brown with white stripes, forming a rough diamond-shape when young. As the tree ages, ridges and furrows develop. In spring, showy, white, bell-shaped flowers mature in clusters of 4 to 5. The small tree produces a dry, 2-winged, corky drupe that is 1.5 to 2 inches long.
