Introduction
Welcome to the Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management Graduate Program webpage. This portion of the Department’s website is designed to answer basic questions about our graduate programs.
Graduate programs are designed to prepare park, recreation, tourism, and sport professionals for leadership and academic positions in their respective disciplines. The Department currently includes approximately sixty highly qualified graduate students.
Research
Each year, PRTM is awarded external grants and contracts that average over $800,000. These funds are used in a variety of ways and often fund interdisciplinary projects that incorporate elements of many different PRTM disciplines as well as economics, behavioral studies, social sciences, information technology and other areas of study.
PRTM often conducts research in partnership with the National Parks and U.S. Forest Services, North Carolina State Parks, the N.C. Division of Travel & Tourism, many N.C. cities, towns and counties, schools, non-profit organizations and even private sector companies. A sample of recent research activities includes volunteers’ perceptions of impacts of the Azalea Festival, sustainable tourism and development in rural N.C., modeling trail degradation using field and GIS methodologies, the impact of size and location of collegiate sports sponsorship, and understanding how race/ethnicity, gender, and socioeconomic status affect leisure activity preferences.
