Ironman vs. Nano-ironman

Nanotech illustrationSo wealthy industrialist genius Tony Stark fights crime in an iron suit, eh? Well, move over, Ironman, Nano-Ironman is here. With a very small addition, researchers at North Carolina State University have created a substance far stronger and harder than conventional iron – think iron on steroids.

By adding nanoscale crystals so small you couldn’t see a gathering of 10,000 of them, iron not only becomes stronger but doesn’t break down in extremely high heat. That means it can be used for engine components that are exposed to high stress and high temperatures and to make bridges stronger and longer lasting.

An NC State student led the research project. He says nano-iron production costs are virtually the same as conventional iron alloys. Hey, Tony, give us a call.
