V Foundation partnership will ensure a ‘pipeline’ of future cancer researchers

Jimmy VTwenty-five years later, the NC State campus still buzzes from the basketball team’s 1983 miracle run to the national basketball title. Most of the Wolfpack Nation can tell you where they were when they watched Coach Jim Valvano run around the court looking for a celebratory hug.

Today, the buzz is about the new partnership between the university and the V Foundation for Cancer Research. The uniqueness of the program is not that it will provide funding for research, but that it exposes high school and undergraduate students to hands-on cancer therapeutic research, encouraging them to pursue careers in combating the disease. Graduate students and post-doctoral students serve as mentors for work done in several research labs.

An interdisciplinary program that involves four of NC State’s 10 colleges, the goal is to produce the cancer researchers of tomorrow. Gimme a hug, Jimmy V.
