National Science Foundation FAQs
Great lineup of questions from "What restrictions will be placed on recovery awards," to "Will NSF approve requests to increase budgets on proposals that are currently in-house."

Q: How much money is available through competitive grants from federal agencies such as NIH, NSF, DOE, etc.?

A:  The final version of the 2009 economic stimulus appropriations bill contains $21.5 billion in federal research and development (R&D) funding, to be invested within two years.  Refer to the presentation, "Recovery Act Research Funding Summary" by Matt Peterson, NCSU Office of Federal Research Affairs for more info.

 DOC $7.9 billion
 NSF   $3 billion
 NIH  $10.4 billion
 NIST  $600 million
 Justice Byrne Grants  $224 million
 DOD Energy
 $300 million

Q: How much money is coming to North Carolina?

A: [from NCRecovery.gov] It is currently unclear how much North Carolina will receive. Many of the funding formulas have not been finalized and the act also injects additional money into the state through targeted tax cuts, additional grants from federal agencies and direct funding for specific federal programs in the state. $225 billion of the $789.5 billion total will be awarded to states based on funding formulas. The Governor’s Office estimates that North Carolina will receive $6.1 billion of the $225 billion total or about 2.7%.

Q: Where can I track state activity?

A: http://www.ncrecovery.gov/  This site was launched on 2/27/2009 as a guide to services of the newly created Office of Economic Recovery and Investment. NCRecovery.gov allows visitors to track federal recovery funds in North Carolina, as well as to learn about local contract and grant opportunities.
