Meet the Vice Chancellor

Vice Chancellor of Research and Graduate Studies, John G. Gilligan Dr. John G. Gilligan, Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Studies encourages and promotes research and graduate curricular development through partnership with the colleges of NC State University, their faculty, and staff. The Vice Chancellor's office plays an important role in the University's relationships with federal agencies, corporations, and foundations in their efforts to support international prominence of NC State's research, graduate program, and technology transfer missions with societal, scientific and commercially viable results.

Title and Responsibility

Dr. John G. Gilligan, Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Studies, North Carolina State University, is responsible for state, federal, industry, and foundation-sponsored programs (total NCSU research and development expenditures are approaching $315 million per year); university regulatory compliance, sponsored program support, university project development, technology transfer and commercialization, Centennial Campus and NC State University graduate school (over 7,000 graduate students in 10 colleges).

Dr. Gilligan has been an NC State University faculty member and administrator since 1983; and Vice Chancellor since 2002. He has mentored over 45 graduate students as a committee member and/or chair. An author of over 100 peer-reviewed publications, Vice Chancellor Gilligan is responsible for over $4 million in external grants/contracts; he is a member and officer of numerous professional organizations and sits on the board for several non-profit organizations. Dr. Gilligan’s areas of scholarly expertise include plasma physics, plasma-material interaction, fusion energy engineering, and engineering education.
