ResTech Job Description

ResNet Technicians are full-time NC State undergraduate students. ResNet Technicians do not have to currently live on campus; however, they are expected to be able to get to any area of campus within 15 minutes during their working hours. Their primary job function is to provide network support, virus removal and spyware cleanup through on-site visits to residents with ResNet connections. Incoming students who will be living on campus will be considered for employment.

ResNet hires many students to work during move-in weekend and the first week of classes because this is the time when most students are getting connected to ResNet and need the most assistance. This position is temporary and there is no long-term committment required.

All ResNet staff are expected to arrive on campus early in the fall for training and to prepare for move-in weekend. Training usually begins approximately one week before the first day of classes.

ResNet Technician Job Qualifications Applicants should have a good balance between interpersonal skills and technical skills.

Temp employees who display excellent customer service, teamwork and technical aptitude during training and while working may be offered an ongoing "pooled" position.

Pooled positions work for several units besides ResNet:

  • ClassTech - hands-on troubleshooting and maintenance of certain technology-equipped classrooms
  • Labs Support Services - hands-on troubleshooting and maintenance of the OIT Unity Labs

Staff in pooled positions work a regular schedule set in the second or third week of each semester. Shifts are generally in a minimum of three hour time blocks and are available Monday through Thursday 7am - 10pm, Friday 7am-8pm and Saturday and Sunday 12 noon - 8pm. Shifts are scheduled around students' class schedules and other regular committments. Pooled staff are expected to work at least 15 hours per week.

The technical skills we look for (but do not require) include:

  • Experience with networking concepts.
  • Proficiency with Windows
  • Familiarity with computing resources on campus as well as Internet resources.
  • The willingness and aptitude to learn and apply new knowledge and techniques.
