New Security Problem in Windows: Microsoft announced on September 10 a new vulnerability in Windows NT, 2000, XP, and 2003 Server. Computers with this vulnerability are open to hackers and viruses. To keep from getting infected, run Windows Update on your computer. Even if you have run Windows Update recently, you must run it again to protect against this new vulnerability.

Mail Server Change: Effective March 1, 2004, ResNet subscribers who use personal mail clients (such as Outlook, Outlook Express, Mozilla, Eudora, etc.) will have to change their outgoing mail server to smtp-resnet.ncsu.edu

VIRUS ALERT - Novarg.A: There is a new virus running rampant on campus. This virus, among other things, causes your computer to send email without your knowledge. Because of the potential load on the mail servers, computers found to be infected may be removed from the network. To prevent infection, make sure you are running an anti-virus client with the latest virus definitions installed. More information about Novarg.A is available from Symantec. A removal tool is also available.

Scheduled Outage: ComTech will be making configuration changes to most ResNet switches. This
configuration change will require only about 1 minute of down time for each
switch. This change is necessary to help prevent switching loops from taking down whole switches instead of just a single
port. Outages in the residence halls are scheduled for spring break. The complete schedule is available.

VIRUS ALERT - GAOBOT: The virus outbreaks that occurred on February 14 and 20 appear to be gaobot. Fortunately, it is removable with antivirus software. You will need to run your virus scanner (with the current virus definitions) in safe mode. Removal Instructions can be found here.

No Mail Sent From Campus Computers: Currently, all mail sent from ResNet computers is being blocked. This is due to a Denial of Service attack launched against our mail servers. Mail can still be sent by using WebMail. For the most up-to-date information, keep checking SysNews.

Maintaining a Healthy Computer: There is a presentation tonight (Thursday, February 26) in the Owen basement lounge at 7:30. This will be presented by two ResNet technicians and will cover such topics as viruses, spyware and security. All are welcome!

Scheduled Outage: On April 8 there will be a brief outage in Lee Hall around 10 AM while a second UPS is installed. Downtime is expected to be about 15 minutes and will not affect the whole building.
