More computers in the DH hill library need to have the microsoft office software. There is never any computers open in the librarys unity lab.

Projectors are very popular for showing Power Point notes. Can be bad if they flip through them too fast and you can't copy down the notes. Good because they can post them online.

Lack of professor knowledge for use of equipment. They already have notes made up for what they're putting ont he white board. Just put it under the projector instead of wasting time writing it on the board. You can do more explaining and talking when you don't write it up on the board.

I have enjoyed professors being able to use the chalkboard as well as overhead projectors to display computer programs or important diagrams that would be hard to draw.
I like having the slides and lessons available on the course websites, as well as having our grades easily accessible.
Having the same notes on-line that are presented during lectures is very helpful.

I think that not all teachers are know enough about the internet and using computers in the classroom and some of them could use some classes. For example, one of my teachers never used his email and only had power points avaliable in Nelson because he did not have a website.

Some professors overuse the technology, especially powerpoint. They just read off the screen. In addition, most of these powerpoints are available online after the lecture, hence, contributing to a student's absence because they can just look at it at their own leisure.
Technology is great in the classroom as long as the teachers know how to use it. I particularly like the distance Ed classes where the lectures are taped so you can go back and re-watch a lecture.

Sometimes, I think it depends greatly on the subject in which is being lectured if technology can be used effectively. Some instructors seem to rely on this technology heavily and cannot continue class if there is a problem with the technology. But in other classes, technologies are needed for things such as taking notes and illustrating a concept. I think overall it is needed.

The only time that classroom technology has been a downfall is when the teacher decides to just have power point slides instead of actually going through the work. this can lead to the teacher going to quickly or covering more information than we are able to absorb.

Computer presentations are much more useful for me than overhead projectors. With the use of computers, the information can be posated on the class website so you can listen to the instructor instead of trying to copy the overhead before he/she takes it away.

This is a stupid question. It all depends on the class. You can't take Computer Science without using computers. It's extremely difficult to learn Math using classroom technology. ClassTech is a complete waste of time for a lot of professors.
Classroom technology should be used more to reduce the reliance on chalkboards. View of chalkboard is obstructed by the lecturer or head of people in line of sight and some boards are very dusty. Using classroom technology could save the lecturer's writing time and increase legibility.
The use or lack of use of classroom technology had no real effect on my ability to learn the material. It's an appropriate tool for some classes, but I had no problem with classes that didn't use anything more complicated than a whiteboard and markers.

For the most part, classroom technology has meant some form of digital slides or powerpoint show which is quite simply the worst style of teaching there is.
my engineering teachers like to use power point because it lets them cover the materials faster; what was once derived on the black board is now just a power point slide. the speed at which he goes through them makes it difficult to learn. I forsee the new generation of successful students distinguished by different learning style. A new generation who can momorize slides more easily, and not necessarily learn as well with a black board.

I especially liked my Java teacher's method. Basically, all of his lecture notes are on a webpage, and in class he projects that webpage and gives the lecture. If I need to study later, the information is on the webpage.

Its effectiveness depends on how it is used. If there is a teacher who knows how to use it, then it could help. But if the teacher has problems with it then, more than likely the student will have problems too and it will not help the students out.

A simple, non-crappy (i.e. non-webCT) system geared toward non-tech professors for putting course material on the web would be good. Something as simple as "upload your document here, it will appear on a list of documents online" would suffice. Perhaps a PHP/Perl script that professors can slap in easily.

Good idea. I used Ruckus and I wish it provided more recent movies for free. Also, because of the pilot program I joined a site where I payed for my MP3's so that I could keep them instead of having to lose my music at the end of the semester.

It sucks if you can't burn cds for free. Getting music from p2p sources is fast, easy, free and more importantly non restrictive.

I did not sign up for any of the pilot services because of over restrictive DRM schemes. I don't support the illegal downloading of music; piracy is illegal, plain and simple. I do believe in consumers’ rights, on the other hand. I feel if I purchase a piece of music from a service, I should be able to listen to and use the piece of music as I see fit. I will gladly pay a premium for lossless, non-DRM hobbled songs, however.

I thought that the Ruckus service was rediculous. It didn't have hardly any new songs, and most of the ones it did have were live recordings. Also I wish I would have been allowed to change to another service since Ruckus was very misleading in promoting their service.
Ruckus' selection was really poor and their GUI was horrible. Slow, bloated, and very buggy. Having premium movies is stupid, and hardly ever adding to the very few free movies is worse. The quality of the music and video (bit rate/resolution/etc) was also very poor in my opinion. The money NCSU wasted on this should be used to do something useful like extending NOMAD wireless service on campus (BRICKYARD & CENTENNIAL CAMPUS!!!)

I won't use the music pilot program for two reasons: a)The music I like isn't available on those services b)I'd rather just buy the CD c)There is no Linux client
It didn't work on my computer, so I never got to use it.
I didn't like ruckus at all. It didn't have most of the thing i wanted and i was becmome more likely to go use another way of getting music and movies.
it should be permanent, and you should be able to get the music off of the comp onto a CD

Ruckus can be annoying to figure out.
I don't want to participate because as I understand it, these services jack your music back if you don't stay with them. I want to be able to keep it. If I wasn't going to get to keep it, I'd rather itune it and just have it for 99 cents.
Seems like a waste of time; I would much rather own the songs (forever) in the form of a CD which I would then transfer to iTunes over Apple Lossless.

The services are not very good because you are not allowed to actually download songs, but you stream them. This means you have to have a constant internet connection to use it.
Napster was not applicable to my computer so it couldnt use it. I was disappointed.

I did not sign up for it because there was not much information about the service when I was sent the e-mail. It looked like junk-mail because there was no mention of NC State, just a generic name. Plus I read that this was a trial program, and that we would have to pay for music we kept, and not knowing much about computers I decided not to deal with any future hassles with the program.

It is ineffective. Songs cannot be played over the summer and they do not transfer to addresses off campus making downloaded music worthless. It does reduce NC State's legal difficulties, but that is all. Anyone who truly wants a song will continue to download them using a P2P service. For me to actually approve of the service, I would want a download service where I own the copyright material and have a transferrable copy to burn to cd or put on an mp3 player and does not require authentication. I would want it to have no DRM technology attached. These technologies will lead to incompatibilities between software and hardware and confuse the end user. I would prefer to have 10 songs for free download per month from itunes that i can burn than to have unlimited streaming access that I already have. It's very important that the music can be backed up so that it isn't lost after leaving the school's network. P2P use will continue to increase until there is no reason to use it.

i chose rhapsody, and they didn't seem to cooperate fully. at times it didn't seem to work, and it would cut off at random times or decide to take away songs i had already downloaded

Needs more music choices/selections
The problem wasn't with the advertisement. Many students knew about it, even talked about it. I think the problem was that when the service stopped being free, they could not keep the things they have downloaded. And students do not want to pay to continue the service.
I don't know much about it, but if it costs a fee then I don't think it will be very popular among college students, no matter what the fee is.
Good idea but I'd like to see something where students could get a reduced rate from a better service...iTunes comes to mind.

the DMA's really limited use. the services seemed stripped down and after a short time Ruckus removed my account and i had no way to resign up
It was a rip-off. The songs on ruckus were old and out of date and nothing i wanted from the last 5 years was on the site. the movies were awful.

I liked the pilot program, and many of my friends that participated in it liked it also.
It seriously sucks. I downloaded a song, and the license ran out the same day. It increased how much I downloaded illegally, because I liked a song, but I was tired of having to download it off of Ruckus 3 times a day. So I downloaded it off of a p2p site, got my fill and erase it from my computer. Hang on... RIAA is at my door (just kidding)
I like it. Downloading for free and not getting busted for stealing is sweet. However, the services only allowed downloading of 320kbps mp3s, and I would think it awesome if it were possible to download the full .cdi file instead. You're paying the full price per song, why not allow us to download the full quality as well? I normally rip my CD's in WMA lossless because digital loss bothers me a lot.
I liked this but couldn't really download songs like I thought they meant. I used it to listen to music when I got bored. It didn't affect the number of CD's I bought.

Apple's ITunes is superior to all the pilot program services. I bought more from ITunes this semester than I downloaded for free from the free Napster. Many college offer these services for free.
We should be able to keep music we download. The whole liscense thing is crap. It's not even compatable with some players, and that makes me very angry. I mean, how good is it if you cant burn it or put it on a portable device? I don't just sit at my computer listening to music all day.

I set Napster up but was never able to use it because I didn't know the code I had to put in to actually get the songs free. There definitely needs to be much more clear instructions on how to use this, and where to get promo codes, etc. I was really excited about the pilot program, but it's lost it's shine since the semester is over and I was never able to use it.

I heard about it at UNC, but I didn't know that we had it. I would like to see this program continued, and better advertized.
It was a terrible idea. I would not subscribe to something temporarily free when it's a hassle and I already have a free way to obtain (read:steal) all the music I want. No one wants to waste their time on a temporarily free alternative when someone who is technologically savvy in the least will use peer to peer filesharing in order to obtain anything they want completely free of charge(well except perhaps the burden on their souls). The great majority of my dorm scoffed at the idea of the music pilot program, and with good reason. Anyone here who actually wanted to pay for music was already doing so. Everyone else has alternatives, and some lame marketing campaign by little known companies and the fallen Napster isn't going to change that.

Continue the pilot program. If you make it more visible all over campus, more people will sign up. Make sure the music is burnable to CDs or else people will continue to use illegal p2p.
I think it's a waste of time. Students want to be able to keep their music, and they cannot afford to pay for it on a regular basis.

If the campus is paying for a service for music for students, it shouldnt be confined to room use. The ability to burn cds, and transfer to songs to an MP3 player should be activated.
As long as free, questionably-legal methods of acquiring music on the Internet are widely available and easy to use, I doubt there will be much participation in this kind of pilot program. Given the rampant state of online music piracy among college students, most students are willing to ignore the illegality and accept the risks in favor of getting their music free and with less hassle (i.e. without DRM protection on the files they download, as is the case with the pilot services).
More information needed to be spread throughout campus.

The only thing that was stupid about it was that the songs would expire and you couldn't listen to them until you updated them, and that was a pain.
It's stupid that the providers cost money and you have to pay a fee to burn cds on top of that; I don't use cds, I use mp3 player and mp3 cds so that part of the service was stupid.

It was really good. This servace should be free to all students staying on campus. Actually downloading songs to burn should still have to be payed for by the student though.

I would really like it to continue next year; for those ppl that would rather have picked a different service they should have the opportunity to sign up for a different service, but those that like their current service they should be able to keep that account so that they can keep all the music that's in that account...and their should have been vendors available that were Macintosh compatible (many friends I know didn't use the pilot program for this reason)

It was terribly publicized, I was never able to find out how to sign up, the follow up articles in the paper never came and no email was sent. I wanted to sign up but no one I knew knew how to do it and we were all pretty dissapointed in the organization. (We are graduate students and didn't really have time to run around and check 10 sources until someone could answer our questions)

I do not feel that it is right to burn copies of songs onto a cd. However, I do like to listen to a few songs on my computer and don't see this any different than a radio station. However, I do think that downloading music should be illegal because many students burn cds from it. I wish I would've known about this service, so I could've taken advantage of it.

A good idea that I think should be given to students for free for college use. If after four or five years they then graduate they will be so enamored with the program that they will agree to pay for it after they graduate.

i think the music pilot program was a great idea. i used rhapsody atleast 5-6 hours a day if not much more. i would be very happy if NC State continued to provide a music service for students and i'm sure i would continue using it regularly.

I initially did not sign up for the program because I thought the email was a hoax. I think if it had been more publicized, there would have been more students signing up for it. I enjoyed having ruckus, and I wish that it was still available. The only thing I did not like about this was that after the trial period was over, I lost all of my files. I think that they should have remained available to me to listen to on my computer after the subscription runs out. After all, the university did pay for the music. Oh, and i would have like a better free movie selection.

My biggest problem was being unable to burn music to a CD or to convert it to a format other than .wma files. Most mp3 players, including mine, cannot play .wma files, therefore I used the service much less than I would have otherwise.

Ruckus was a poorly design software with no contacts for help. i signed up with the service and couldnt even get past the password screen due to program error. the one time i did get use it, the movie selection provided was very poor.

How does it work?
It's easier to listen to the radio, even if it involves not always getting to hear what you want to hear, than it is to constantly drain your bank account to buy it.

An interesting idea, but I was not particularly interested.
I was aware the services existed but I doubt I am alone saying that I saw _no_ information on _where_ and _how_ to sign up for the service. Also, I doubt the service would be worth a damn anyways, as they'd be focused on pushing trendy, pop music and those of us who listen to 80's metal have no need for such a service. The only reason I would ever download music illegally would be if I cannot find my kind of music, which used to be a problem for me (those old Slayer CDs are hard to come across).
I have not used a music download service before this semester. I am thankful for the pilot program. It has helped me to know what features and options to look for when I choose a service after I graduate.

They focused on a very shallow, pop-culture audience. too much attitude, too little content. they were trying to act cool and cater to what they thought most students would be interested in. What i really wanted was to be able to burn cds and not have to worry about constantly logging in.

It was a very good idea, I just think that it needed to be better publicized because a lot of people either disregarded the email or were confused by it. Also, it could have been better received had you been able to burn cds or upload music from the provider.

Good opportunity but not very well advertised. When I received the startup email from Rhapsody, it didn't include any directions on how to get started, or a user name/password. I had to go to their website and play around until I found out how to access what I had signed up for.
I do not like not being able to burn my CD's for the car. That is the reason for downloading music. Taking away that makes downloading music pointless. I do not want to huddle around my laptop and listen.
I am using Ruckus. The music is fine, but I don't like that you can not burn them onto cd's. Also I don't like how all the old movies are free to watch but the new movies you have to pay for. I thought the sevice was supposed to be free.

I thought it was a good way to sample CD's before I bought them, especially for older (90's) artists that are not often played on the radio.
I didn't sign up for it because I didn't want to be in a program that was free for awhile and then had to be paid for. It reminds me of those supposedly free CDs you get on TV, but in the fine print you have to get 10 more CDs for $40 each.

It was worthless. The music was not free as stated in the advertised email, and I uninstalled within 24 hours of getting Napster.
I think with more marketing during orientation and early in the Fall semester more students will sign up for the program.

Loved using Rhapsody and came to use it frequently. It let me explore new music and find long forgotten music instantly. It is reliable and I felt confident of being virus free and not worrying about illegal activities.

Wow. It sucked BADLY. I don't really want to use 219837598173947139847193874981374 proprietary media players, when I could just be using Winamp or Windows Media. Tell the music services to get a life and make the songs so I can play them in other players on the same computer, at least. I'm not so worried about porting it to my laptop or tablet... And the other half of that is... a) There was nothing I wanted b) I don't really want any illegal music...I'll just stick with what I have. c) I don't really buy CDs that much either, so you should add a "stayed the same" option up there. d) Why did you give us this "free stuff" for a semester and then take it away? That's just moronic. You can say "look, have some free music and movies...oops not anymore, now you have to pay for it." The people will just go back to using BT (bittorrent) and all those other stupid file-sharing proggies, instead of paying a fee for stuff they could technically get for free. *disclaimer* I haven't downloaded ANYTHING copyrighted (to my knowledge) this semester. So...don't think I'm using the evil programs.
The restrictions each service places on music are antithetical to my music listening/use habits. I use iTunes, and I own the music I buy and can do with it as I please.
I really enjoyed having Rhapsody. It let me sample bands before buying and exposed me to a much, MUCH wider variety of music than I ever would have heard otherwise. More exposure = new interests = more sales.
The e-mail was sent out too far in advance, It was confusing, and I never figured out how to take advantage of the free music downloads. It wouldn't let me in. so I went somewhere else.

I did not use the pilot program, even though I knew about it because the music was to be taken away at the end of the program. I would like to see a music service that offered an unlimited amout of downloading for a monthly fee, kind of like napster's new "napster to go" service, except I have an Apple Ipod, and that can't be used with napster to go.

All the music disappears when the free trial is over. That sucks.
The music available on the service is geared toward popular music, if you like smaller and less well known bands it doesnt provide you with any service becaue you can't download music from these bands

Personally, the use of DRM puts me off. Fair Usage rights are trampled horribly by such measures; if I bought the music, I should be able to use it (personally; I'm not advocating distribution) whenever/wherever I want to. So I don't use any of the current paid music services.

From the Napster website: "It is necessary to maintain a Napster subscription in order to continue access to songs downloaded through the Napster service." I would never pay for a service that would not allow me to access the songs I downloaded when I payed for them. Although the music pilot programs are a proactive step, they are still flawed and I currently have no intention of paying for one, nor wasting my time on a free trial.

I was unaware when i signed up for napster that i would still have to purchase my music! had i known this, i would have signed up for ruckus.

None of the music services supported alternative operating systems, or even Apple systems. I signed up for the Napster service only for the purposes of helping to reverse engineer the protocol in order to help develop an open source linux client. Had any of the music services supported my devices I would quite likely have used it much more.

I was frustrated by the inability to move the music out of Napster and play it with another player. Without the equalizer settings and being able to combine it with my other playlists, it was just too much of a hassel.

As long as a variety of songs are available, both old and newer songs, and as long as I don't have to download a lot of applications to get the service to work, I will sign up for one of the services that NC State offers. In the case of using Ruckus you had to keep renewing licences every few months. It would have been better to just let the licences last until the end of the semster unless renewed.
I thought that it was nice that they offered such a wide variety of vendors. There could have been more information about the vendors because it would have influenced my choice for the vendors. I also not having the ability to listen the music offline is a put off.

It was a nice idea to give students free DLing of music software.
Maybe information on this program, can be emailed to the students on campus.
None of the services supported linux or unix-based operating systems. They also did not support open music standards. Because of these two reasons, I can't recommend the music pilot program.
Ruckus is horrible. HORRIBLE. It has no selection of music, I could find maybe 1 out of every 10 bands I searched for. Also it was no in mp3 format, and I could not play the files in Winamp (my prefered player). I was severely displeased. Ruckus is crap.

napster worked awesome...at first. i used napster on three separate computers, then, i upgraded my HD with raid0 (reformat)... it would not let me download any of the songs i owned back to that same computer. this problem could get bad if i used napster for a long period of time. if i had to reformat more than once, there would probably be many of my favorite songs i could never access. with limewire i don't have to put up with any of this you may only download 3 times crap. i would pay for napster after the free period ended if it werent so restrictive about downloading music. Right now hardly any of my favorite songs work on my main computer.

The program I used was crap. I got a new computer and then it wouldnt let me download the software to the new computer. The music selection was alright. I signed up for ruckus because it promised TV and Movie selections. "Selection" is a horrid word. the selection was miserable and never changed. the movies were outdated and it was just crap.

Good idea, but many downloaders prefer to remain as anonymous as possible, so when these services go back to 'payment required' terms, I'd rather they don't have my name and computer on file.

I used Ruckus because they were offering movies to download. I was not impressed with the movies that Ruckus offered, nor was I impressed with the quality.
I knew it existed, but I never got the e-mail or anything explaining how on earth I was supposed to recieve it or set it up, and so I missed out on it... A fact which has me rather displeased, to say the least.
The entire music downloading fiasco is all just a big sham. The music industry is pulling the wool over our eyes and we can't even see that. It doesn't matter if we download music from each other. CD sales have risen in the past 3 years, even though their argument is that CD sales are dropping. There is absolutely no need for the RCIAA and their tyrannical watch over college students downloading music.
I've had many friends say positive things about the services but I didn't think I personally would find it useful.
I wish i would've taken advantage of it...heard good things from those who used it.

Discounted prices on MatLab? I noticed in Lee that it's a 10Mbps network connection, while in other dorms it's 100Mbps. It might sound whiney to "only" be able to downoad at 1.2MB/sec, but when I can go to a friend's dorm in Sullivan and hit 4MB/sec or more sometimes... Note that I really love the connection I'm getting with ResNet--it's much cheaper than my DSL at home and 20x faster (here in Lee; faster in other places).

I think that some internet consistency might be good. We had dropouts and internet losses for a total of probably 10 hours over the whole year. While that may not sound like a lot spread out over that time, it can be frustrating to lose the internet or have dropouts when you're trying to do homework.

The Information Technology Division needs to address the large amount of malicious traffic on the network. An unprotected computer has about 1-2 min connected to resnet before its infected. This happened to me and two of my roommates (didn’t even have time to download and install antivirus). This needs to bee addressed.

I'd like to see ITD provide a bittorrent tracker for students to use for their own stuff, I.E. films students have made that they want to share, and then block the port bittorrent trackers use to the outside internet. I do wish there was wireless access in the Design school including the design library. They recommend laptops with wireless, but the only network there is not a public one.
The only thing that I know of is a service for when the network is down. Usually when the Internet "went out" it was only for maybe a minute, but a few times it was longer. It would be nice if there was a telephone service or something where I could get an idea of what's going on and how long it will take to fix.

There were a times throughout the semester that almost all of Sullivan was without internet for a short amount of time. I think ResNet should send out an email to the affected users, explaining the reason for the downtime. If the downtime was planned, then an email should be sent ahead of time so we can plan accordingly.

The 'techs' are great at fixing any of my computer problems and are very good with explaining the problems. The techs are the best part of the resnet service.

That we sign up our computer for resnet use and we can plug into any outlet within our fraternity house on greek court to get internet access, instead of just turning on certain outlets in peoples rooms. The ResNet Office in the Hillsborough building is incredibly difficult to find. The guard at the front desk should know where the offices are to point students in the write direction, or a desk assistant should be hired to give directions, OR there should be a clear map.

Thanks for providing us with no download/bandwidth restrictions/quotas for how much we can download and upload per month (I know that some ISPs are starting to do this). The speed at which I can use the network here is phenomenal! A suggestion--don't require everyone here to use a virus scanner, but if this is necessary, PLEASE use something other than Symantec. Symantec makes the worst computer programs in history! I know of no other set of programs where you have to download a removal tool to completely get rid of a program because the packaged uninstallation tool doesn't completely kill it. Symantec spends too much time scanning your computer and slows EVERYTHING to a crawl. At least half of the time it doesn’t work; I find that Trendmicro’s “Housecall” free online scanner works much better at finding and killing viruses. Just require that students keep their Windows Updates current and highly recommend that they bring their own cheapo router (wireless if necessary). This will literally keep out 99.99% of the viruses out there. I would also highly recommend the use of SpywareBlaster; instead of being a retroactive solution to spyware, it is proactive and keeps ActiveX-based spyware (for IE) and tracking cookies (for both IE and Mozilla-based browsers) from installing themselves. Ad-Aware SE and SpyBot are great, but why use those to get rid of spyware when you can prevent it in the first place? Whenever I scan with Ad-Aware and Spybot (~once a month or less) I never have any objects—ever. A note for improving the installation instructions for Spybot--including this might be helpful to reduce spyware infestations: Right after installing, download ALL the latest updates. Mode>Tools>Hosts File>Add Spybot hosts file--this is a list of websites known to distribute spyware; if a user goes to these sites or is redirected to one, the hosts file links it back to the user's loopback address thus keeping them from visiting the site. Mode>Normal Mode (to keep people from screwing with settings) Immunize!!! This also helps keep spyware from loading onto your computer. HIGHLY recommend that students use the latest version of Firebox or Safari as we all know that IE is...crap. Thunderbird (also from Mozilla) is great for e-mail; I’ve never had any problems and it works much better than Outlook and Outlook Express, which are great at distributing viruses! Thunderbird….doesn’t. Plus it has a built-in learning spam filter (not that this does me any good since I don’t get spam in my NCSU e-mail…that’s what my yahoo e-mail is for). Also—please recommend that people try to figure out for themselves what is going on if their computer has a problem. The internet is a huge source of help and the chances are that someone has had this problem before and has posted a fix! For the first two weeks of school I literally fixed 10-20 computers in my spare time, with 90% of them being from the “laptop sections” even though I’m not in that program. (Thanks for not installing all the latest Windows Updates….) I’m the go-to guy for everyone who knows that I’m good with computers; if there’s a problem they come running. While I didn’t charge anything for these fixes they could have all been avoided. (I still fix quite a few computers…but most of the time they let me install my group of anti-spyware things so I don’t have to deal with that problem on their computer again) After having worked at a computer repair shop for the past two summers, being CCNA certified, and performing spyware and virus removal on almost every computer the latest summer I was there—I had no use for the Computing Essentials CD, but I’m sure that 90% of the people coming here did have use for it—how many actually used it, that’s another matter… About the questions in the survey: Note that the EOS lab I use is in Daniels and was for my CSC116 class. We have 5 devices running from the ResNet connection in our room using my wireless router—2 desktops, 2 laptops, and an Xbox. ResNet handled this load quite well! I don’t use the music downloading services because I would much rather physically own the music (in the form of a CD) and then transfer it to my computers over Apple’s Lossless encoder. It seems that I’m in the minority of students. Primary OS: Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition SP1 (desktop; soon to be dual boot with [hopefully] Gentoo or Realm Linux) XP Pro SP2 (notebook) I will be buying an Apple sometime over the summer, hopefully a Powerbook G5 if they’re released in time. You need to give all new students a real pilot program during orientation. You have to tell them how to install the virus software and you need to teach them how to set it up so that it updates the virus definitions software automatically. It'd also be helpful if you taught them a bit of common sense on "shady" websites. Just teach them that if it's a web page covered in porn and pop-up ads and it tries to install software on their machines, they need to click "no" and get away from that website. If the website opens up new windows (one after another, keeps trying to install software, etc) teach them to turn their computers off. Lord knows that the start of the last fall semester was an IT nightmare. I think that better education is necessary to prevent that stuff from happening again.

I had virus trouble after self-reformatting my computer, so I called the ResNet help desk. They sent out a technician later that day and he (I beleive his name was Greg) installed the symantic anti-virus software and set up my computer with all functions that would protect my computer. He was informative and helpful, so I am glad that the service is avaible and very appreciative of the help provided from the Help Desk and the technician. Thank you.

The wireless campus initiative is going very well. I loved the idea of the voting system. It also got students involved. I hear lots of my friends getting their friends to vote for them to win what building they want.
I was a little unsatisfied with having to have three technicians to fix my computer, but other than that I am glad the service is provided. They were very nice.
It was impossible to get anyone to come to my room to fix my computer. I was told for a week straight that someone would contact me soon to come up to look at it. I gave them my cell phone number because I got tired of sitting in my room waiting on them. They never used it, and usually I was just down the hall. Because ResNet took so long to come help, I gave up got a friend to fix my computer instead.

The kiosks are slow and they don't work sometimes. The unity account seems so outdated compared to yahoo and hotmail. I have heard from many people that the service technicians are inefficient and they don't know what they are doing.

Despite having a top dollar anti-virus program, every year my computer has gotten a virus and my computer has been reformatted twice from it. There are too many virus's running around here.
I think there should be better people available for use at the help desk because the people I have talked to do not help to much.
The survey was a little longish I thought, and the percentage questions made me feel goofy, like I should get out a calculator. Consider revising this for next year.

Occasional outages of ResNet was very annoying.
I at one time had a problem with my computer. When I called the help number they told me they could not help me and wouldn't send anyone to check on it. A few days later there was a ResNet technician in my suitemates room, I asked him to take a quick look at my computer and he was able to fix it relatively quickly.

It seems like this year it crashed a lot more. Also, there are some stupid people out there that don't know much about computers, and they won't go to workshops. You guys would be better off sending out e-mails like "HEY DONT OPEN UP THAT FILE!" "HEY JUST BECAUSE IT SAYS YOU MUST DOWNLOAD TO VIEW SITE DOESNT MAKE IT SAFE" You know, stuff like that.

I don't think you should charge a fee if someone comes to the room and there wasn't a problem with the computer. I didn't know if there was a problem or if I just didn't know how to do something and they were going to fine me if the computer was fine so I didn't have anyone come by. Some of us aren't trying to make you make extra trips- we just don't understand everything about computers.

I do not think that it is necessary to require each room to have and pay for a phone line. It is neither useful nor beneficial. However the opportunity to have a phone line hooked up to ones room should always be an option.

The ResNet site does not seem to be updated a lot. The site linked from the student page has information pertaining to Spring 2004. Also during this semester there seemed to be several periods where the network kept going down and hindered e-mail, browsing, instant messaging, etc. When I petitioned ResNet I got back a very generic responce (it was obviously some form letter because my friend got the exact same response when he petitioned ResNet and they both had the same spelling errors). The stability of the network needs to be looked into so that this downtime is not a common occurance anymore.
I've often experienced 'hickups' in the ResNet service, temporary moments of lag in either game console or computer games. There have been times where both my suitemates and my computers' could not even access the internet.
I think that the service is great how it is.
I needed something from resnet/the help desk only a few times, but was very unimpressed the times I did need them. The only helpful Resnet person I knew quit because it was too much of a time commitment, maybe you should think about shortening the time committment or hiring more people so the quality people you have do not quit, because the people I dealt with had no people skills and were not puncual and were unable to help me with my problems.

My computing essentials cd did not work correctly. I tryed to download the semantic softwear, but my computer still tells me that i havent done that.
ResNet is good, I had a problem with my computer, so I had to reformat, but when I came back online, in two days, I had 9000 viruses hit my computer. I have Symantec, Adaware, and Spybot.
I like ResNet. Really.

Symantec is suppose to load and be working everytime my computer is on but this is in fact not the case. i have had to uninstall and reinstall this program several times and even now i feel it is not working as it should.

Sometimes, resnet internet access would blackout. In the past year, the net access was cut about 4 times with each one lasting from 15 mins to 90 mins. My suite and adjacent suite reported the same situation.
I honestly think it would be better if ResNet was able to turn a blind eye to the use of programs such as BitTorrent. I understand that you're being threatened with legal action but I think it would be best to maintaiin the anonymity of students using your service much like Charter and Time Warner maintain for their paying customers. The only reason the RIAA and MPAA target ResNet and campus services like ResNet is because you buckle under the threat of legal action. This leads us to believe that if we are ever busted for uploading a movie or in any way sharing something that we will be thrown to the wolves and have our internet revoked. This is not a good policy considering we can do all the downloading we want and not have to worry about being caught. It also makes a lot of us feel as though all the activity we are involved in is monitored somehow, and that invasion of privacy is just not a good feeling. If there were some way you could protect students, or maintain some sort of front for us, I'm sure we'd be more appreciative. Buckling to groups that use fear tactics against government organizations and college students is no way to get us to like your service. Other companies that offer similar services to their customers have no problem with this concept, neither should you. Also I had to go a whole weekend without internet because your DHCP server *crashed* and wouldn't issue me a good IP address. You sent a technician out here that I knew more about computers than who then proceeded to look at me and say "It doesn't work". As genius as this moment was and as glad as I was to be paying for your service you could easily have known that your DHCP server was acting up and not have wasted my time sending anyone out. Other than those two things though I'd like to remark that service has been outstanding, my connection speeds have always been great, and only one intrerruption in service that was remarkable is a great achievement. So keep up the good work.
I had to clear everything out of my computer, pictures, music, personal files due to a virus i got from ResNet. I appreciate yall losing all my personal documents and irreplaceable pictures. (sarcastically) I will admit though the help desk did some good in getting the plain windows version back- minus my stuff.
I wish we had wireless in all the dorms because all the girls on my hall (including me) had massive virus problems because we plugged directly into resnet. At home, I never got viruses, but as soon as I got here, I had to get a whole new harddrive because mine was so damaged. Wireless would make it a lot easier.
ResNet is probably one of the best reasons to live on campus - it's fast, convenient, reasonably priced, and there are people to help you anytime you need it. Also, I like that IT has been working hard at installing wireless networks on campus. I see a lot of people using that, and I know that appreciate it.

The Windows computers in the Sullivan lab cannot get to www.gmail.com, but the Macs do, and the Windows computers in other labs do.

ResNet has been pretty effective. However,there have been instances where a technician has come to fix my computer and did not what they were doing. I am no where near being a computer genius, but in some cases I troubleshooted my own problems better than they did.
I've never had to use resnet myself, but my suitemate has. I was around when the gentleman came to assist her. He was very knowledgable, polite, and did a good job taking care of her computer. I think what resnet does is great, thanks, and keep up the good work!

Very satisfied with ResNet, but my boyfriend has had to reformat his computer many times due to viruses. I do not know if that is because of what type of computer it is or what, but he has had major problems with it.

the computing kiosks are always really slow or locked up whenever i want to use them. you need to have people check them more often. i'm not sure how they get messed up, but somehow they do.

I have been very pleased with resnet through my experiences here at NC State. I think it is great that a technitian will come out to help you if you are having computer problems. I have only needed this service once, but I was impressed with how helpful they were.

In the very few chances I had to play any online games, I would more than often get poor server response times (around 800-900ms) around midnight most nights.

It was hard for me to get in touch with ResNet whenever I had a computer problem. My computer has been experiencing problems for most of the school year and it still is. I was hoping that a technician would come to my room and fix it but no one ever did. Work on having technicians come to students dorm rooms more for help instead of trying to fix problems over the phone or online.

ResNet's pretty handy, but why is my dorm's network slower than others'? Fix that.
A good percentage of Resnet technicians are not qualified in the least to deal with many of the problems student computers have. I have personally had to fix over 15 computers this year after my friends had called Resnet and the technicians could not fix them. These were not hardware based problems either. They were relatively easy problems which took me less than half an hour on average to fix.

all your text boxes start with a space.. why? all of the ones for percentage should start with a default 0 in them.
Encourage people to install not only symantec, but all windows updates (service packs, etc) before ever plugging in their internet. Even with symantec i kept getting viruses w/o even opening IE. I had to install SP2 from cd to keep from getting the viruses. If i tried to get the updates right when i first plugged in the internet, i'd already have the viruses (quarantined every couple minutes by symantec). Just a piece of advice.

There were many problems with connectivity on ResNet this year, more than I experienced last year. I do not know the reason for these (growing pains of an expanding campus, perhaps?), but it was a great inconvenience to find that my internet service had crashed for 10 consecutive hours. It was also a minor inconvenience the multiple times my internet connection died for an hour or so while I was working on something or talking to someone.
I am under the opinion that any given Windows-based PC is a ticking timebomb waiting to get 0wn3d, allowing the attacker to assault networks using student/campus owned resources. I have therefore come under the opinion that ResNet should push students to use Mac OS X and Linux much more strongly. I also feel that ResNet should enforce bandwidth caps on students accussed of sharing illegal files. Their p2p networking is saturating the campus network for those of us who use it for legitamite purposes (referring mostly to those of us running servers on ResNet). And _thank_ _you_ for being the best ISP in the world! No where else (except maybe Japan) can this much bandwidth be purchased at such a low price where you're allowed to run any kind of server/client software you want! I myself run an Apache/ftp/ssh/MySQL desktop/server happily :) Also, question 36 is damning to Linux users and could be rephrased.
Along with the required anti-virus software, spyware protection should be distributed (bundled?) if possible, because the spyware is just as annoying and dangerous.
My roommate and I experienced intermittent and recurring packet loss in our dorm (Bragaw) which I documented through use of tools such as trace route. When I called ResNet about it I never got an answer as to the cause, or even an agreement that yes, we were dropping 1/3rd of our outbound packets.

For the last month in Wolf Village I had very slow internet service. It was like using dialup or worse.

There were alot of problems this year with resnet service going down and not working.
I responded that I did not use any computer labs, but I do use the labs in Brooks Hall for the College of Design
other than a few outages, i rate the service as excellent, i have very few complaints. The worst was when a network switch went out before winter break and the whole dorm went dead.

really don't think that resnet should be a separate fee. most colleges and universities provide ethernet connections to campus residents either free of charge or included in the room rate.
I had quite a few problems with resnet for playing games, when I complained about this I was told the reason for my high packet loss from me to the server was due to bandwidth limiting to prevent large upload servers on p2p networks. Although I agree that something should be done about this, I find it ridiculous to think that there is no other solution than having a campus wide limit to total uploading bandwidth(This is what I was told the problem was by the person in charge of the limiting). In some of the games I was trying to play I simply was not able to because I was having 50%+ packet loss and they would kick you. I appreciate that this is probably not high on your list of concerns, however, resnet is a service for people living on campus, and as such I expect to be able to use it for things other than just school work. I was very unsatisfied by the reply I got which was basically, yes this solution sucks, but too bad, we'll try to change it in the future. This is not some little problem that can be fixed far down the road to me, there must be a better solution.
over allthe system works well however, sometimes during periods of high traffic the servers are so slow they may as well not be there, making it almost impossible to do homework anywhere but a lab.

The Metcalf network needs to be upgraded, as it is a tenth of the speed of networks in dorms such as Sullivan, and there are frequent, although brief, interruptions of service in Metcalf.
ResNet is a great service provider, best i've ever had, I have DSL at my house and it is down half of the time and even though i know that ResNet has it's problems sometimes it works well most of the time, so i'll just say thank you.
The service technician that came to my room was very rude to my room mate and me. I think quality in customer service can be improved with the technicians. Thanks!

it's great that the resnet website is promoting spy bot search and destroy. there's a new version of symantec antivirus that includes realtime scanning for malware and such. it might be worth considering shifting the site license to a version that has this since such a large percentage of problems could be traced back to adware behavior and clutter.

I was disappointed when I asked for help with a huge virus I had on my computer. I was simply told to run Symantec, which is the first thing I did. I did not receive any further help, and ended up working hours on my computer to get this virus off.

Several times the internet connection was horrible. If it is known that internet work will be done then emails should be sent out so people can schedule other times to do work on the internet
resnet should expand its appointment times to last for longer than 1 hour. the technicians have no time to get done what needs to be done & the students have fight tooth & nail to get another appointment within a week of that happening, often times.
Please do a better job with viruses. My laptop received a virus the second I plugged in the ethernet cord the day I moved on campus. A Resnet Technician managed to get the free virus software installed, even though I had already purchased and installed a virus program on my laptop prior to moving in. I finally had to take my laptop to a private computer store and spent over $150 to fix it, and it's still messed up from the viruses. This does not make me happy.
I'm an easy going person, as long as my internet works all the time, then i'm satisfired.

I run an HTTP server for the fun of it (Apache2), and having bandwidth limits would severely hinder my ability to share my creativity with friends. Which would not be cool at all. Yeah. So. Don't institute bandwidth limits. Please. I'm begging you.

The wires of my phone lines seemed to be crossed with others.. It was very annoying and I never got a chance to get it worked out and instead just used my cell phone at all times.

A few questions I was required to answer in order to submit, even though they didn't have an answer option that applied to those who don't have their own personal computer.
At the beginning of the school year, my new laptop was infected with multiple viruses, including somethign called a "demonic possession" by the student technician that came to my room. 2 different technicians couldn't help me solve my problem and I was very, very dissatisfied with the security of my computer on the ResNet service. I believe the damage is irreversible, and even at the end of the year now, I am still having problems that I cannot fix. I would prefer not to even use the NC state internet acces because of the terrible problems I've had this year and the inability to fix them. As for the question about which lab I use most often on campus, I use the Brooks Hall Lab several times a week (which was not listed as a choice.)
In response to #36....: I did download Symantec from the website. However, some Trojan or worm disabled it (I don't remember what the name or type was). As a result, I have downloaded AVG Antivirus Software for free from their website. Please let me know if this software is sufficient, or what should be done about it (if I can bring in my computer to the Hillsborough Building). ResNet is very nice most of the time. The fat pipes (especially upstream) and relatively liberal internet usage policies factored heavily in my decision to live on campus for the next semester (hahah, geek). I highly commend the fact that you don't use packet shaping/QoS, and how you currently handle subpoenas. However, the packet loss marathons which occur once or twice every month are less than amusing (usually in-campus connections, level3 is all gravy). Anyway, thank you for a job well done! =)

If you are in charge of the XBOXs and PS2s in the wolf's den, they are pointless. Many people already have these systems and I really doubt people will pay to use them. I want the arcade machines back! We were the only university I've ever heard of with an arcade. It was so great! Do you realize how popular (and rich!) the place would be if you had a Dance Dance Revolution machine?
Having had dial-up when before I came to college, because of my experience with ResNet I must continue to have a high-speed Internet connection for life.

ResNet has been a great provider, I will miss it next year not being on campus b/c I know my off campus friends tend to have problems with their service some times.
ResNet was fine... but it took at LEAST a month to get my ResNet working in my Wolf Village building D room! I called it in in December... it was very much after classes started (weeks) that it was finally resolved... after several ResNet visits to my room. I was told it was the building, not Resnet... but so many other people in my building had internet.
ResNet has good service and friendly staff
Need for more bandwith durring evening hours. Internet speed decreases dramaticaly from 7-12 so much as it hinders the ability to work and turn in work online.
The Symmantic antivirus software does not work well on my Mac after I upgraded to Tiger. Also it seems pretty useless since it sometimes find Windows viruses but doesn't do anything about it.
I enjoy having access to ResNet. It's better than my home connection.
Just need better technicians who know more about common problems during the beginning of the year--this would save a lot of good students much money and grief.
I feel that the IT Kiosks are not very helpful because you can do no web browsing outside of the NC State web page.
It rocks... and you need to nclude the labs in HARRELSON as one of the choices for lab use

Resnet is reliable-enjoy it. Kiosk computers only work half the time! Theyre very slow and tempermental when they do!
resNet seemed to be pretty good overall.
a few times dorm wide outages occured. If this was planned can we get a warning e-mail?
i hate the viruses i get off of resnet. they completely messed my computer up and some girl from your department erased my norton antivirus stuff after i spent hours getting it on there
I don't downlaod music from 020 services, I just buy the cds
very satisfied with ResNet; did not use the antivirus software on the CD because it was not compatible with windows XP (my computer has both XP Pro and 2000 Pro on it)... would have been nice to know XP Pro was no good for that kind of generic software
My computer was affected by viruses all year. Someone from ResNet came to fix it, but it didn't work in the least. I am very unhappy with how my computer performed this year and I have never had any problems with it until I came here.

Overall very good job. The two people I had come to my room were nice and helped me w/ my computer problems a lot.
I have a feeling I am going to miss ResNet a bunch when I'm in my apartment next year. I have began to take excellent internet connectivity for granted. I have been pleased with ResNet's performance, offered services, and technical assistance.

In line with the comment above, do you still need to format a k drive to create web pages from your own computer? There is nothing I can find on the web page about it. Would be interested in getting into personal web pages but the tutorial assumes you already know about k drives and how to put stuff into your www folder.
I installed an antivirus, and still received viruses. It got so bad that I had to send it back to IBM, where they had to give me a new hard drive. I think that you guys need to have a better fire wall or other protection against what happened to my computer. Having that virus problem made it very hard for me to use my laptop and interfered with my school work.

I think ResNet is very efficient. When I had a virus on my computer, a technician was able to come as soon as I had free space in my schedule. The technician I talked to on the phone was really helpful also, and ResNet technicians really know what they are talking about.

Regarding campus Kiosks, I have found that many of them are inoperable when I try to use them. They seem to work for a few minutes but many times if I can get it to work at all it will stop responding. If they were more reliable, I would definately use them more often.

My internet is ALWAYS slow here. I've also gotten more viruses this year than ever, and the help desk people couldnt figure out what was wrong with it or how to fix it. I was not happy with my internet service this year.
The kiosk hardly ever worked!
