Windows Vista has all of the
necessary software that you need to use your ResNet connection to
connect to the Internet. This document describes how to configure Windows
Vista for use on ResNet. These settings are the default installed with Vista, so if you haven't made any changes, you shouldn't need to do anything except plug in your computer.
Make sure your Ethernet card is properly installed and your 10BaseT
cable is plugged into the proper wall outlet.
More information about Windows Vista security can be found here.
Open the Network Control Panel
- Click on the Windows button in the bottom left
- Select "Network" from the list on the right side
Open the Network and Sharing Center
- Click on "Network and Sharing Center" in the tool bar
Note: You may be asked about turning on network discovery. ResNet recommends you do not turn it on as this makes your computer more vulnerable.
View the status of the network
- Locate the network whose connection is labeled "Local Area Connection." In the image below, you would be looking for the first network in the list, called "Network."
- Click on "View Status" for the correct network.
Check the properties of the connection
User Account Control
If a window like the one below pops up (and it probably will), click "Continue."
Locate TCP/IP v4
- In the list of services, locate "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and click on it.
- Next, click on "Properties."
.
Verify TCP/IP settings
This is the place where you tell your computer to get its IP address automatically. Make sure that you have "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically" selected, as in the picture below.

You're done!
Now click "OK" a couple of times and "Close" and whatever else you need to do to get all the windows closed. Once you are back at your desktop you should be good to go!
