Happy Constitution Day!

The members of SCJ decided to celebrate the birthday of the Constitution and spread the word about Constitution Day by spray-painting the Free Expression Tunnel the night before. We met at 10 p.m. at the tunnel. Meredith and Helen brought painting materials, and Luis brought the stencils he laser cut in chip board. Helen and Susannah had spent a few hours earlier in the week designing our mural and creating the stencils in Illustrator.

This was our first bonding experience of the year, and everyone seemed to have a really great time. Tim, one of the new members, really stepped up — and helped us with our math, as Helen and Susannah felt it was important to keep the flag proportional to the real thing. Everyone participated in the painting, taking turns to make it look really cool and unique. We had several passersby tell us how awesome they thought our design was, so we knew we’d done a good job when we were through.

We discussed doing another Free Expression Tunnel mural for other events in the future, like Free Speech Week and Sunshine Week, because everyone had such a good time, and we were still spreading the word about Constitution Day to the campus. Plus, it only took us two hours to paint the entire thing.

Thanks to everyone who helped out! And more photos to be uploaded eventually!

VP Nominations

  • Send any nominations to Susannah by Friday, Sept. 4 at 5 p.m.
  • You can nominate yourself or someone else.
  • Read rest of Susannah’s e-mail for more info:

So, we’re taking votes to see who will replace our former VP. Since I know some of you have standing conflicts on Fridays, we’re going to do this a little differently than usual. This is how it will work:

  1. Send any nominations to ME, Susannah, by Friday, Sept. 4 at 5 p.m. You can nominate yourself, if you like, or another member on staff. And, if you hold another office, we will hold another election for your position after VP is filled in. I’ll let you know if you are nominated, and you can let me know if you want to be on the ballot. (I will assume that if you nominate yourself, that you want to be on the ballot!) Remember, student leaders of any media may not hold any SCJ office.
  2. Then, after I have all the nominations, I will put together a ballot over the weekend and I will e-mail it to you.
  3. You will print it out, or write your own, fold it up and stick it in Martha’s box and/or hand it to Martha. There will be a place for you to put your initials on the ballot. We just want to make sure everyone votes and no one votes twice. (You can vote for yourself, if you like. Only Martha will know.)
  4. Martha will tally the votes and we will notify everyone at our meeting on Friday, Sept. 11 at 4:15 p.m.

Next Meeting

  • No meeting next Friday due to Labor Day, so next meeting will be held Friday, Sept. 11 at 4:15pm, in the usual spot.

Minutes | Aug. 18

1. CALENDAR

  • Susannah distributed a calendar of SCJ events and meetings for the year, here are some highlights:
  • WED AUG 26: Information session for members of Student Media; newcomers will talk to us and learn about SCJ, and hopefully join! (7 p.m. @ Witherspoon 3rd floor)
  • I (Helen) will design a poster (email to Martha by Saturday, print on/by Monday) advertising the even; poster will feature photos, some in b&w, some color
  • SEPT 4: applications due for potential new SCJ members (emailed to Martha)
  • SEPT 17: Constitution Day celebration? let’s paint the free expression tunnel red, white, and blue
  • SEPT 25: new member inductions; let’s go out to dinner somewhere to celebrate! maybe Amedeo’s?
  • OCT 19-25: Free Speech Week: Martha encouraged us to involve professors, as they are a good way to get support and get our message out there — however, they are busy, so we need to contact them soon if we want to pursue that
  • NOVEMBER (sometime): let’s get out of the board room. We could tour WRAL, visit high school journalism classes, or collaborate with First Year College. Since FYC students are unsure what major they want to follow, doing a presentation about journalism would be applicable.
    • not sure who a good faculty coordinator for this would be over at FYC?
  • DEC 11: Founder’s Day Celebration: Potluck dinner at someone’s house, perhaps?

2. GENERAL INFO:

  • This year there will be a $30 membership fee for new members, and a $10 semester activity fee (for existing members only). These are due by SEPT 15 to Meredith, our treasurer.
  • All SCJ members should encourage their Student Media friends to join SCJ – I think May was going to talk to Nubian Message during their Friday meeting? Everyone should follow her lead!
  • Ask Susannah for a calendar if you did not get one. Don’t lose it!

3. ATTENDANCE IS IMPORTANT!

  • Please show up to things!
  • The next SCJ event is the SCJ Info Session on Wednesday, August 26, at 7pm in Witherspoon. Be there or be square.
