WKNC 88.1 FM is a student-run, non-commercial radio station. Established in 1922, N.C. State student radio provides exciting programming to devoted listeners throughout the greater Triangle area. Boasting 25,000 watts of intense broadcasting, WKNC reaches a vast local, regional and international audience with online MP3 and OGG streaming technologies.

WKNC prides itself in offering unique and adventurous programming. The daily indie rock format during the week, coupled with electronica, hip hop and heavy metal allows for a diverse and satisfied audience. Weekend specialty shows reach niche audiences for local music, punk, a capella, industrial, R&B, South Asian, Americana and Latin-influenced music. WKNC serves its listening community with an up-to-date concert calendar, daily N.C. State news, campus and community announcements, ticket giveaways and sponsored concerts.

WKNC is committed to maintaining a cutting-edge approach to radio broadcasting. The station offers state-of-the-art technology and training to engineers, on-air personalities, music directors, marketing managers and producers. WKNC staff have gone on to work for Capitol Broadcasting, Curtis Media, Clear Channel Raleigh, Dick Broadcasting, Murphy to Manteo Music Management, Thrill Jockey Records in Chicago and Putumayo World Music in New York City.

Sponsorships

WKNC welcomes sponsors looking to share our dedicated and successful community. Just like you would hear on an NPR-affiliated station, WKNC offers underwriting opportunities for local establishments and organizations, both large and small. Called a donor announcement (or DA), these 30 second recorded messages acknowledge your support of WKNC and provide information about your business to our listeners. In addition to on-air mentions, WKNC can also work with you to develop sponsored concerts or events.

Advantages for WKNC Sponsors

Possible Tax Write-Off
As a part of the state university system, WKNC is a non-profit organization, making many sponsorships and donations tax deductible.

Inexpensive
WKNC offers affordable sponsorships that are significantly less expensive than conventional advertising offered by commercial radio stations.

Free Production
WKNC will draft, voice and produce your donor announcement at no cost to you.

Less Clutter
WKNC only makes two minutes available for donor announcements each hour. Rather than being one of four ads per break at a commercial station, at WKNC your business is one of four per hour.

Community Awareness
Through your sponsorship of WKNC, you build an identity with the N.C. State and Raleigh-Durham community.

Advance Education
Donations and sponsorships support the hands-on training WKNC provides students of N.C. State University.

Current Music Schedule

Music schedule

Rock (weekdays, 5 - 7 PM)
Rock has evolved to an eclectic blend of music ranging from its original form to hip hop. No longer is it singled out as a specifi c music genre, but instead has become a melting pot of independent music, heavy metal, hip hop, and electronica.

Underground (weeknights, 12 - 2 AM)
Underground is WKNC’s hip hop chop shop. Underground highlights the best in underground and up-and-coming talent as well as local talent. Aside from the late night shows, hip hop is dispersed into the daytime format.

Afterhours (weeknights, 8 PM - 12 AM)
Afterhours is the electronic and ambient format usually played in the evenings on WKNC. The selection of music ranges from DJ to DJ because of the diverse sounds range from organic sounding bossanova to deep drum and bass.

Hard Rock and Chainsaw
(Fridays 12 - 5 AM & 8 PM - 6 AM Saturday)
