As part of the transparency of our organization, each year, we post our annual report online. The annual report is one of several reports we are required to produce each year. It is submitted to the director of the Center for Student Leadership, Ethics and Public Service. He submits it to the associate vice chancellor. She combines it with her other reports and submits it to the vice chancellor. He combines it with his other reports and submits it to the provost. He combines it with his other reports and submits it to the chancellor. Officially, it becomes the administrative record of the year.

This year’s report shows some of the highlights of the year and identifies some areas for concern particularly in terms of finances, notably administrative service fees and the increased cost of benefits for the full-time staff, and space allocation.

No other student group on campus has the demands placed upon it that the students have who produce the daily newspaper, keep a radio station on the air 24/7, produce the final draft of history, produce a weekly publication that maintains a discussion about the news from an African-American perspective, and shows the creative side of our campus. Our online presence and video presence continue to be areas of focus and growth.

READ the whole report for more insights.

The Associated Press and Agence France-Presse April 10 reported that Chris Hondros, a 1993 graduate of N.C. State with a BA in English, was killed in Libya on assignment for Getty Images. Later in the day, Getty Images confirmed that Hondros had been shot and killed. Tim Hetherington a photographer also working in the area was killed.

Many alumni and friends have asked how to contribute in memory of photographer Hondros, a former photographer for both Technician and the Agromeck.

If you, or someone you know, would like to make a donation to N.C. State in Chris’ memory, we are working with University officials and the family to set up an endowment in his name. We can begin collecting donations now that will go into a holding account. After we raise $25,000, we can create scholarships or other opportunities in Chris’ name, depending on the wishes of the family. In the unlikely event that we do not raise $25,000, we can still use the money for programmatic needs such as a speaker series like the University Scholars series that has that brought Chris to campus twice in the last two years.

Such donations are fully tax-deductible.

Announced at the awards ceremony in New York City March 13, the Agromeck yearbook received a Gold Crown, the highest award. The Windhover received a Silver Crown.

Adviser Bradley Wilson said, “Not many programs at NCSU can claim they have brought the University as much national recognition for the last few years than the yearbook and literary magazine. I’m extremely proud of all the hard work the students have put in producing publications NCSU students, faculty, staff and alumni can be proud of.”

A total of 1,434 newspapers, magazines and yearbooks published during the 2009-2010 academic year were eligible in the 2011 Crown Awards program.

The grand total of 170 Crowns consists of 47 magazines, 51 newspapers and 72 yearbooks. Of these, 32 Crowns will be given to collegiate publications.

“This is one of the highest awards a college publication can receive,” Wilson said. “It’s a testimony to the coverage the yearbook students gave the campus as well as the high-quality reporting, photojournalism and design. When it comes to remembering what campus life was like in 2009-2010, there will be no better resource than the yearbook.”

Susannah Brinkley, editor of the 2011 yearbook and design editor for the 2010 edition, said “It feels really good to be recognized for our work. Our staff worked really hard last year, and it’s really humbling to know that we were able to continue this great legacy of the Agromeck.”

Windhover literary and arts magazine

Wilson also said the campus should be quite proud of the accomplishments of the Windhover literary and arts magazine.

“A lot of people don’t think of NCSU as a place where you can find poets and artists. You can. The literary and arts magazine gives students an outlet for their creative side,” he said. “Look, read and listen to the works in the magazine. Viewers, readers and listeners will find a whole new side of the campus.”

“It’s an honor to be named a finalist. It’s nice to see that the recognition for all the hard work that we put into the book,” Robbins said. “It’s nice to be recognized at a national level, but it’s also nice to know we’re doing our job right. It’s also helpful to see the campus recognize the quality of the book and how we work hard to document the history of the University.”

The NCSU yearbook was one of 11 finalists for the national award it also received in 2009, 2008, 2007 and 2004 and was a finalist in 2006.

The Pacemaker winners will be announced for the first time at the fall ACP/CMA National College Media Convention in Orlando, Oct. 26-31.

Joshua Chappell and Brooke Wallig are the newest recipients of the Technician grant, a $1,000 grant for students with fewer than 36 hours who serve staff positions on the daily student newspaper and who plan to assume a leadership role in the future.

Chappell, a sophomore in microbiology, attended the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics where he graduated with honors in 2010. He is originally from Goldsboro and is a Park Scholar. He said he hopes to attend either medical school or graduate school for life sciences. In his free time, he enjoys playing the piano, swimming, and watching NCIS.

Gerald Boarman, former chancellor of the NCSSM and now head of school at the Bullis School in Maryland, said, “Joshua is an intelligent and exceptional student who works hard for all that he achieves and therefore excels on all levels.”

Boarman said it’s clear that Chappell values both the rigors of advanced academic work, leadership and service to his community.

“He has tremendous integrity,” Boarman said and discussed one situation that demonstrated not only citizenship but devotion when one hall mate underwent surgery for a brain tumor and Chappell orchestrated efforts to visit the student in the hospital.

“Josh has given his time and his heart to ‘bring NCSSM to the student’ instead of letting the student feel left out. Josh does not do this for praise. He does not do it for credit. He truly does it because he cares. How amazingly honorable he is!”

Myra Halpin, dean of science at NCSSM, said, “In addition to being an outstanding student, active in the community and state, excellent swimmer and talented musician, Josh is a fine young man.”

Wallig, a freshman in science education, graduated from Smithfield-Selma High School where she was the class salutatorian and active in Rotary Club competitions and Tar Heel Girls State.

Bradford Wingo, coordinator of advising for the College of Education, said Brooke “works hard, stays hard and plans proactively to ensure that her efforts are well spent.”

Wingo also said Wallig’s commitment to the daily student newspaper is yet one more example of her strong work ethic and passion.

“As if being a teacher education major and Teaching Fellow were not enough, Brooke sought involvement with the Technician from her first moments on campus. Since that time, Brooke has shown her true value to one of the most important student voices on campus. Brooke has invested considerable time and effort to ensure that the Technician maintains a high-level presence on campus.”

And Michael Clinkscales, director of the N.C. State Teaching Fellows Program, said Wallig is an “outstanding young lady with a heart of gold and a stomach to face any challenge head-on.”

Clinkscales also said Wallig will be an asset to the teaching profession and “we fortunate that she has chosen to become a teacher.”

Wallig and Chappell join Alanna Howard, Jeniece Jamison and Brooke Shafranek as recipients of the grant.

The Brick is interactive in nature. Students who complete the interactive portions of the publication and present it for certification in the spring will win prizes such as a free yearbook and other prizes. Freshmen should watch for ads in the spring to claim their prizes.
