Student Media Board of Directors


In accordance with the Student Media Constitution, representation of the Student Media Board of Directors shall be:
  1. Three student body representatives elected at-large in a student body election;
  2. Three student college representatives, appointed by the dean of the college, as apportioned to the colleges in the Media policies;
  3. Two faculty representatives, serving on staggered two-year terms, as apportioned to the colleges in the Media policies;
  4. Three individuals not under the employ of the University providing expertise on media management qualified and selected as provided by the Media policies;
  5. One representative from each media outlet chosen as provided by the Media policies, non-voting;
  6. The president of the Student Body, ex-officio, non-voting;
  7. The senior-most professional employee of the Student Media, ex-officio, non-voting.

Elected student members shall not be members of the Student Senate, of a Student Body Medium or any other campus-wide advisory or governance body as defined in the Documents of Policy.

Appointed student representatives (3)

  • Peyton Holland is a senior majoring in business management with a concentration in marketing. Within the College of Management, he serves as a Student Ambassador and has been chosen to serve with a small group of students to develop a new student government for the College of Management. Outside of the College of Management, Holland is involved in SkillsUSA, a non-profit career and technicial student organization. He has served as the national college/postsecondary vice president for the organization and is still heavily involved in leadership development, conference management, and business and industry relations at the state and national level. At home, he serves as Sunday School superintendent for New Elam Christian Church. In his spare time, he enjoys pursuing his passion of motivational speaking. One day he hopes to run for governor of North Carolina.
  • Laura Laurene is a senior majoring in communication (public relations) and minoring in design studies. She also has a degree in English and a minor in sociology from NCSU.
  • Vincent Sheehan is a junior majoring in communication (public relations).

Professional (3) and academic representatives (2)

  • Bob Ashley has been editor of the Herald-Sun, a 40,000-circulation morning daily in Durham, N.C., since Jan. 3, 2005. Before coming to the Herald-Sun, he was editor for nearly 11 years of the Messenger-Inquirer, a 30,000-circulation daily in Owensboro, Ky. He has been editor of the Centre Daily Times in State College, Pa., and held various editing roles at The Charlotte Observer and at The Raleigh Times, where he began his professional reporting career. He is a 1970 graduate of Duke University with a bachelor of arts in history, and was managing editor of The Duke Chronicle.
  • Dean Phillips is a lecturer in the NCSU Department of Communications where he teaches courses in public speaking, public relations, media, persuasion, newsroom ethics and broadcast performance. He has worked as a senior consultant for public relations firm where he performed a variety of public relations and media relations functions for political candidates, corporations, nonprofits and trade associations. He is president of deanWORKS, a production company which specializes in the making of television campaign and corporate image ads. He is a former vice president of Carolina Broadcasting and a former television news anchor, managing editor, news director and investigative reporter.
  • John Clark is the general manager of WRAL.com at Capitol Broadcasting Company in Raleigh, N.C. A native of Townsville, N.C. he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mass Communication from Campbell University where he is pursuing a Master of Business Administration degree. John resides in Angier, N.C. with his wife and two children.
  • Sherry O’Neal is the director of communications for the NCSU College of Design, where she manages publications, media relations and the image library for the College of Design. As an N.C. State alumna, O’Neal said she is proud to be working for her alma mater. During her 15 years of experience in college relations, she has managed many award-winning publications and admission videos. Prior to joining the College of Design in July 2003, Sherry served as communications director for Triangle Transit Authority. Previously, she held similar positions at N.C. State University's Institute for Transportation Research and Education and Peace College. She also taught public speaking and desktop publishing courses for Wake Technical Community College and Peace College, served as president of the College News Association of the Carolinas and served on the board of the Raleigh Public Relations Society. In addition to her degrees, she holds a professional communication certificate from Duke University's continuing education program. O’Neal received the College's 2005 EPA Award of Excellence.
  • Phil Zachary is president and chief operating officer of Raleigh-based Curtis Media Group, owners of more than 24 radio stations across North Carolina including Raleigh-Durham, Greensboro-Winston Salem and Greenville-New Bern. Curtis Media is one of the largest independent radio broadcasters in America. Prior to joining Curtis Media in January, 2002, Zachary was vice president/market manager for CBS Radio in Washington, D.C. He began his radio career while a student at Holy Cross College in Worcester, Mass. and landed his first job as a newscaster at WTAG in that city. Zachary has also held programming and management positions in Providence, Boston, Cincinnati, New Orleans and Charleston, S.C. Zachary is active in the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill community. He and his wife Dawn reside in Raleigh and have three children.
