At the national college media convention this fall the Agromeck yearbook received one of the highest honor given to college yearbooks — a Pacemaker.

“Only seven universities had yearbooks that received the Pacemaker,” adviser Bradley Wilson said. “This definitely puts the NCSU yearbook in an elite class of collegiate publications. The entire campus community should be proud of the work the staff did to document the history of the University.”

The Associated Collegiate Press gave the award to the 2008 Agromeck yearbook edited by Mary Beth Hamrick. Other staff members included: John Cooper Elias, managing editor; Bryant Robbins, design editor; and Stephen Bateman, photo editor.

According to an ACP press release, “Judges looked for a number of factors, including excellent photography, complete coverage, innovative design and exemplary copy. Out of the 54 total entries, 15 college yearbooks were chosen as Pacemaker finalists.”

This was the third time the NCSU yearbook has won a Pacemaker. It also won in 2004 and 2007. It was a finalist for the national award in 2006. This year, only 15 schools were finalists making even being a finalist an honor nationally.

“This book, and this staff, are definitely competing at a national level, bringing recognition to the campus and the North Carolina community,” Wilson said.

CLICK HERE for a complete list of Pacemaker winners.

COLLEGE BROADCAST AWARDS

WKNC 88.1fm was a finalist for a National Student Production awards given by the College Broadcasters, Inc. for radio/best newscast for ”88.1 Seconds of Technician – April 27, 2009″ produced by Saja Hindi and Derek Medlin.

INDIVIDUAL AWARDS

In addition to the Pacemaker honor for the yearbook, two students came home with top recognition at the national level.

John Cooper Elias and Bryant Robbins won first place in yearbook/magazine page/spread. This 2009 Design of the Year Award was co-sponsored by Adobe Systems. The two received recognition for a spread in the 2009 Agromeck yearbook on the Krispy Kreme Challenge.

Ana Andruzzi and Biko Tushinde received third place in newspaper page one for a front page design in the Technician also on the Krispy Kreme Challenge.

“Think of all the front pages and yearbook spreads published in the world in the last year. We had some of the best,” Wilson said. “Clearly this points to our strengths in visual communication as the students try to tell the stories impacting students all over campus.”

BEST OF SHOW

In addition to the awards for work submitted to judges before the national conference, NCSU student publications also placed high in the Best of Show honors given by the Associated Collegiate Press on site. With almost 2,277 students in attendance, according to Logan Aimone, executive director of ACP, “By all measures, the convention was a success. One glance through the Twitter feed (#ncmc09) will verify that students learned a lot during the day and had fun during the night.”

Windover, the NCSU literary and arts magazine edited by Joe Wright placed second

Agromeck, the NCSU yearbook placed second for the 2009 edition edited by John Cooper Elias

Technician, the NCSU daily newspaper, placed second for an audio podcast produced with WKNC 88.1fm produced by Graham Bruns and Stephen Kinane

Technician, the NCSU daily newspaper placed third for a special new-student supplement edited by John Cooper Elias

With the 2009-2009 academic and fiscal years behind us, it’s useful to look back at the progress we’ve made in certain areas and the areas we’ve identified for improvement. Financially, the NCSU Student Media is in solid shape. Although in the short-term, due to the declining economy, we’ve increased our dependence on student fees, the long-run we should be able to decrease that dependence. We had a solid year in recruitment and in recruiting a diverse array of students. We also increased the visibility of the program through active participation in the North Carolina College Media Association and other state, regional and national associations. CLICK HERE for the full report.

The national Society for Collegiate Journalists released the names of the national individual and publication award winners. NCSU media and staff member won 20 awards, including nine first-place awards. NCSU swept the newspaper feature writing category with stories by Kathleen Gordon and Alison Harmon. NCSU also swept the radio broadcast news category with “88.1 Seconds of Technician” by Tyler Dukes, Kyle Robb and Laura White. The Agromeck yearbook received five first-place awards, including first place for overall excellence in large schools.

NEWSPAPER

NP1, Overall Excellence, published more frequently than weekly: 2nd place Technician
Judge: Kristen Graham, The Philadelphia Inquirer. Comments: “An impressive student publication, with good design and nice writing.”

NP8 Feature Writing: 1st place, Kathleen Gordon,Technician, “Student finds adoption a real choice” Feb. 25; 2nd place, Alison Harman, Technician, “Economic slowdown hits part-time workers” Aug. 27; 3rd place, Alison Harman,Technician, ” Warriors engineer armor from cardboard’ Sept 19.
Judge: Lacey Howard, Decorating magazine.

NP10 Sports Features: 3rd place, Clark Leonard, Technician, “Hancock finishes career in style” April 22.
Judge: Glen Kemery, senior editor, Yahoo! Sports.

NP18 Front Page Layout: 1st place, Helen Dear, Technician, “Obama, Dems Win,” Nov. 5; 2nd place, Helen Dear,Technician, “Choose your SBP today” March 25; Honorable mention, Susannah Brinkley, Technician, “Krispy Kreme Challenge” Jan. 24.
Judge: Sterling Chen, News Art, page design, The Philadelphia Inquirer.

NP21 Sports Page Layout: 1st place, Susannah Brinkley, Technician, “Former Wolfpack Coach” Aug. 21.
Judge: Sterling Chen, News Art, page design, The Philadelphia Inquirer.

NP23 Inside Page Design, Soft News: 3rd place, Susannah Brinkley, Technician, “The Road to Success Blocked” Sept. 23.
Judge: David Kordalski, AME/Visuals, The Plain Dealer. General comments on the category: “The three winners in NP23 were by far the leaders in this category. Generally, the entries suffered from weak or overuse of color, poorly conceived images, bad crops and unsophisticated typography. The students should learn how to get the most out of the paper’s typographic palette rather than making one up for one package, and they should never, ever, squeeze or otherwise manipulate type until they really understand it well – and then, they won’t have to! All that said, I was pleased to see smart breakouts of content that could be used to hook readers in.”

RADIO

RD1, Broadcast News: 1st place, M. Tyler Dukes, WKNC-FM, “88.1 Seconds of Technician” March 17; 2nd place, Kyle Robb, WKNC-FM, “88.1 Seconds of Technician” Dec. 1; 3rd place, Laura White, WKNC-FM, “88.1 Seconds of Technician” Feb.18.

RD4 Commercial, Promotion and Public Announcement: 3rd place, Robert Earle, Industrial Revolution Promo.
Judge: Brett Tannehill, Senior Reporter, Alabama Public Radio. Comments RD1: “put up your best information at the top of your story.”

YEARBOOK

YB 1, Coverage of the year: 1st place.
Judge: Rick Gotshall, formerly of the Indianapolis Star. Comments: “Most schools neglect to include local, national and worlds news as it affects campus. The first-place book did this to a degree while also offering a clear portrait of the school year.”

YB 2, Concept: 2nd place.
Judge: Rick Gotshall, formerly of the Indianapolis Star. Comments: “Effective use of graphic and verbal thematic elements, using a solid design formula. I especially liked the use of song lyrics as headlines to carry the theme throughout the articles.”

YB 3, Reporting in words: 1st place.
Judge: Rick Gotshall, formerly of the Indianapolis Star. Comments: “This was an extremely hard category to judge because all of the entries were quite good. The articles were well written, with engaging leads and illuminating quotes. This was not mere yearbook “copy.” These were real stories showing how good yearbooks are written.”

YB 4, Photography: 1st place.
Judge: James Rainey

YB 5, Layout, design, graphics: 1st place.
Judge: James Rainey

YB6b, Overall excellence, large schools, enrollment 6000+: 1st place.
Judge: James Rainey

Martha Collins serves as the chapter’s adviser.

The N.C. State chapter of the Society was formed in 1996. In 2003, Jerry Moore, then editor of the Technician, was selected as the National Collegiate Journalist of the Year by SCJ.

Judge: James RaineyMartha Collins serves as the chapter’s adviser.
The N.C. State chapter of the Society was formed in 1996. In 2003, Jerry Moore, then editor of the Technician, was selected as the National Collegiate Journalist of the Year by SCJ.

The Crown Awards are considered at Columbia by panels of invited judges, working in small groups to review each publication. During Crown consideration, publications are judged on their excellence as shown by their design, photography, concept, coverage and writing. Crown Awards summarize overall excellence in the entire publication and function as a “top-down” view of general excellence.

“While sales of the yearbook continue to decline, we have begun to consistently produce one of the best books in the nation,” said Wilson, also adviser to the yearbook. “I hope the students, faculty and staff will realize the value of this historical record and keep it alive. The yearbook is one of the first resources historians turn to when trying to get a reflection of the year.”

The NCSU Student Media Board of Directors hired top leaders for the 2009-2010 academic year this March.

AGROMECK — Bryant Robbins, a sophomore in business administration, is this year’s design editor and is on his second year on staff. He was the only applicant for the position. He is filling some big shoes with outgoing editor John Cooper Elias being a Matthews Medal recipient. The 2008 edition of the Agromeck yearbook received both a national Pacemaker and Crown award, national championships for college yearbooks. “After the past two great years the Agromeck has had under the leadership of Mary Beth Hamrick and John Cooper Elias,… it is now my time to step up to the plate and to lead the way to produce another great Agromeck.” design@agromeck.ncsu.edu

TECHNICIAN — Ty Johnson, a junior in history, is this year’s news editor and a former assistant sports editor. He joined the staff in the fall of 2008. “From the position of editor-in-chief, I would be able not only to affect the direction of a section, but of the entire organization as Student Media continues to evolve into a multimedia-driven, 24-hour news outlet.” Johnson will lead a staff of more than 100 reporters, designers and photographers and a budget, solely funded by advertising, of about $390,000. news@technicianonline.com.

WINDHOVER — Helen Dear, a senior in graphic design, is this year’s design editor of the literary and arts magazine. The 2009 edition which Helen helped to produce is due for distribution in mid-April. “By exposing a multitude of students to such a visual and literary expertise, Windhover gives to readers what I am lucky enough to experience on a daily basis. N.C. State students produce work that rarely reaches past the walls of studios or English classrooms, and Windhover is a perfect outlet for it.” editor@windhover.ncsu.edu

BUSINESS OFFICE — Laura Frey is a junior in parks, recreation and tourism management and currently a display ad sales representative. As business office manager, Laura will oversee the sales and marketing efforts of the $1 million Student Media operation. Charlie Weinfield was named as sales manager to directly coordinate the sales efforts. Frey said, “The knowledge and growth that I’ve gained in my current and previous positions with the Student Media Business Office, give me the confidence in knowing that I can lead and communicate effectively.” Phil Zachary, board member and president and chief operating officer of Raleigh-based Curtis Media Group, said that the talents of these two individuals will allow the Business Office to succeed in a declining economy in which all mass media outlets are struggling to survive.

WKNC 88.1FM — Mike Alston is a senior in civil engineering with a minor in business management. Mike joined the staff in the spring of 2008 and is now the local music director. “Under my leadership, WKNC will expand in influence, both on campus and in the Triangle community; we will become more marketable and be able to bring in more money for Student Money.” gm@wknc.org

NUBIAN MESSAGE — Demi Olubanwo is a junior majoring in communication with minors in journalism and film studies. Demi joined the staff in August of 2007 as a photgrapher. “There are many areas of the paper that are doing quite well right now and so my job would be to maintain those areas in their current state and improve them if possible.” He cited as areas he wanted to work on for improvement as circulation and awarenss of the paper campuswide as well as increasing staff training and the paper’s online presence.

In later spring student body elections, the Student Media had three referenda on the ballot. The first, to remove section 3.2 of the Constitution, was binding and passed

DALLAS — The North Carolina State University Agromeck yearbook staff has been recognized by Tyalor Publishing for yearbook design and coverage and is included in the 2008 edition of the Yearbook Yearbook.

“I’m amazed at what our schools accomplish,” said Marilyn Scoggins, editor of theYearbook Yearbook from Taylor Publishing. By recording the events, memories and history of their schools, each staff preserves moments for years to come. Kudos to every school recognized in the Yearbook Yearbook.”

Top staff members of the 2008 edition included: Editor Mary Beth Hamrick, Managing Editor John Cooper Elias, Design Editor Bryant Robbins, Photo Editor Stephen Bateman and Adviser Bradley Wilson.

Taylor has published the Yearbook Yearbook, highlighting the best of the books produced by Taylor Publishing, for 23 years.

“Taylor Publishing proudly honors the best of the best in Yearbook Yearbook, and journalists across the nation will use featured ideas to whet their appetites for 2010,” Scoggins said.

Thousands of yearbooks published by Taylor for the 2008 academic year were evaluated in one or more areas: cover design, theme development, layout/design, photography and secondary packages. Taylor Publishing selects only about the top 5 percent of yearbook staffs for inclusion in the book.

“Having North Carolina State University featured in Yearbook Yearbook is an award with rewards,” education specialist Judi Coolidge, a former long-time adviser, said. “Your outstanding work offers inspiration to thousands of other students who aspire to your level of excellence.”

The 2009 edition of the Agromeck yearbook is scheduled to be finalized March 13. Order a copy!

At the national convention of the Associated Collegiate Press, College Media Advisers and College Broadcasters, Inc. in Kansas City. Oct 29 – Nov. 2, the NCSU Student Media received national recognition and students attending the conference did everything from participate in critiques to teach sessions.

“It is so much fun to go to national conventions with students from top programs all around the nation,” media adviser Bradley Wilson said. “Our students stayed up well past midnight critiquing pages and having pages from our publications critiqued. It was a great learning experience.”

This year, the NCSU yearbook editor, John Cooper Elias, helped to teach two sessions directly. And media advisers Bradley Wilson and Jamie Lynn Gilbert taught numerous sessions.

“These conventions can be grueling,” Wilson said. “They are a lot of work. But visiting with the students and seeing how they apply what they learned is exciting.”

The following students were recognied in The Best of Collegiate Designpublished by the College Media Advisers and released at the fall convention of the College Media Advisers in Kansas City.

Second place, yearbook student life spread • John Cooper Elias[Judges said: FUN! Very interesting subject matter and domiant photo. The fact box is interesting and the donut adds some, but not too much, interest to the muted background.]

Fifth place, feature page • Tyler Dukes and William Alligood[Judges said: "North Carolina State is an excellent source for information regarding barbecue, and this package by Tyler Dukes and William Alligood tells novices how a great cookout comes together. Readers can use this page to assemble their pig-cooking arsenal and to plan a whole day of cooking before the football season opener's 6 p.m. kickoff. The icons are whimsical elements in the timeline, and the styling of the picnic table also shows a great deal of design forethought. Though the typography could be stronger, with fewer contrasts in the headline and in the body copy, the multiple levels of visual storytelling make this a winning design entry.]
