The annual report highlights N.C. State Student Media’s programs, initiatives and staff accomplishments while making recommendations for the future. It will eventually become part of a comprehensive annual report for the Division of Student Affairs.

SCJ recognizes the top submissions for yearbook, newspaper, broadcasting, magazine and online media along with offering awards for individual writing and imaging and overall excellence.

Agromeck yearbook swept all six categories, taking first place in coverage of the year, concept of the book, reporting in words, photography and display and the overall excellence award for large school yearbook. The 2011 Agromeck, edited by Susannah Brinkley, has already won a number of awards from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, Associated Collegiate Press, College Media Association and North Carolina College Media Association.

WKNC.org, the website for WKNC 88.1 FM, received a first place overall excellence award for companion broadcast website. Technician was also honored with a third place overall excellence award for newspapers published more than weekly.

Six students received eight individual awards. All entries were published in the 2011 calendar year.

The N.C. State chapter of the Society for Collegiate Journalists includes 14 active members under adviser Martha Collins.

Taylor Cashdan, Josh Hyatt, Mason Morris, Jamie Lynn Gilbert, Tyler Dukes and Alex Sanchez show off their awards for the daily newspaper, yearbook, literary magazine and radio station.

NCSU Student Media received national recognition from the Associated Collegiate Press, College Media Advisers and College Broadcasters, Inc. at the National College Media Convention Oct. 26-30 in Orlando, Florida.

• The 2009-2010 Agromeck yearbook, edited by Bryant Robbins and Michele Chandler, received one of only six Pacemaker awards given nationwide.
• The 2010-2011 Windhover literary magazine, edited by Mollie Mohr, was a Pacemaker finalist.
• Luis Zapata was one of three NCSU photographers to be recognized in ACP’s Photo Excellence Awards. He won first place in environmental portrait. Honorable mentions went to Brent Kitchen for sports picture and David Mabe in general news.
• Susannah Brinkley received fourth place in newspaper page/spread in the Design of the Year competition.
• A story on taco trucks from WKNC’s “Eye on the Triangle” earned Mark Herring and the WKNC staff a finalist award for best radio/audio feature from College Broadcasters, Inc. in its national student production awards.
• WKNC.org was a CBI finalist for best student media website for the second year in a row.
• Windover won first place Best of Show for the 2011 edition edited by Mollie Mohr.
• Agromeck placed third for yearbooks 300 or more pages in Best of Show for the 2011 edition edited by Susannah Brinkley.
• The Sept. 2, 2011 “88.1 Seconds of Technician,” produced by Mason Morris, placed fourth in Best of Show for audio podcast.
• The 9/11 10th anniversary edition of Technician, edited by Laura Wilkinson, placed ninth in Best of Show for four-year special edition.
• College Media Advisers named Jamie Lynn Gilbert an Honor Roll Adviser for four-year broadcast. She was one of only seven advisers honored this year and one of only 13 broadcast advisers ever to be recognized by CMA.

ACP expanded its annual individual awards program to honor up to 10 entries in each category this year, announcing finalists over a four-day period beginning Aug. 29. First through fifth place winners will be announced Oct. 29 at the National College Media Convention in Orlando, Fla. Luis Zapata, a 2011 alumnus, is a finalist for a Photo Excellence award in the Environmental Portrait category. The photo of Chef David Mao from David’s Dumpling and Noodle Bar on Hillsborough Street ran alongside the article “No MSG, No Fortune Cookies: Redefining casual Chinese food” in the Jan. 14, 2011 Technician.

David Mabe, a senior in computer engineering, received an honorable mention for general news picture for capturing Kelly Hook’s reaction to her election as 2010-2011 student body president. A photo of a botched save on the baseball field also earned Brent Kitchen, a senior in mechanical engineering, an honorable mention for the sports picture category. Alumna Susannah Brinkley, editor of the 2011 Agromeck, is a finalist for Design of the Year for newspaper page/spread. The design presented data representing  students’ political and social views from a political science class poll and was published in the Dec. 6, 2010 exam issue of Technician.

ACP also named the 2011 Windhover, edited by alumnus Mollie Mohr, as one of seven finalists for a Pacemaker award in the literary magazine (four-year) category. Students from radio station WKNC also earned honors from College Broadcasters Inc. For the second year in a row, wknc.org was named a finalist for Best Student Media Website in CBI’s National Student Production Awards. WKNC is also a finalist for Best Feature for “Taco Trucks,” a piece from the Feb. 22, 2011 “Eye on the Triangle” public affairs program produced by Mark Herring, a senior in Spanish language and literature, and the WKNC staff.
