At the national college media convention this fall the Agromeck yearbook received one of the highest honor given to college yearbooks — a Pacemaker.

“Only seven universities had yearbooks that received the Pacemaker,” adviser Bradley Wilson said. “This definitely puts the NCSU yearbook in an elite class of collegiate publications. The entire campus community should be proud of the work the staff did to document the history of the University.”

The Associated Collegiate Press gave the award to the 2008 Agromeck yearbook edited by Mary Beth Hamrick. Other staff members included: John Cooper Elias, managing editor; Bryant Robbins, design editor; and Stephen Bateman, photo editor.

According to an ACP press release, “Judges looked for a number of factors, including excellent photography, complete coverage, innovative design and exemplary copy. Out of the 54 total entries, 15 college yearbooks were chosen as Pacemaker finalists.”

This was the third time the NCSU yearbook has won a Pacemaker. It also won in 2004 and 2007. It was a finalist for the national award in 2006. This year, only 15 schools were finalists making even being a finalist an honor nationally.

“This book, and this staff, are definitely competing at a national level, bringing recognition to the campus and the North Carolina community,” Wilson said.

CLICK HERE for a complete list of Pacemaker winners.

COLLEGE BROADCAST AWARDS

WKNC 88.1fm was a finalist for a National Student Production awards given by the College Broadcasters, Inc. for radio/best newscast for ”88.1 Seconds of Technician – April 27, 2009″ produced by Saja Hindi and Derek Medlin.

INDIVIDUAL AWARDS

In addition to the Pacemaker honor for the yearbook, two students came home with top recognition at the national level.

John Cooper Elias and Bryant Robbins won first place in yearbook/magazine page/spread. This 2009 Design of the Year Award was co-sponsored by Adobe Systems. The two received recognition for a spread in the 2009 Agromeck yearbook on the Krispy Kreme Challenge.

Ana Andruzzi and Biko Tushinde received third place in newspaper page one for a front page design in the Technician also on the Krispy Kreme Challenge.

“Think of all the front pages and yearbook spreads published in the world in the last year. We had some of the best,” Wilson said. “Clearly this points to our strengths in visual communication as the students try to tell the stories impacting students all over campus.”

BEST OF SHOW

In addition to the awards for work submitted to judges before the national conference, NCSU student publications also placed high in the Best of Show honors given by the Associated Collegiate Press on site. With almost 2,277 students in attendance, according to Logan Aimone, executive director of ACP, “By all measures, the convention was a success. One glance through the Twitter feed (#ncmc09) will verify that students learned a lot during the day and had fun during the night.”

Windover, the NCSU literary and arts magazine edited by Joe Wright placed second

Agromeck, the NCSU yearbook placed second for the 2009 edition edited by John Cooper Elias

Technician, the NCSU daily newspaper, placed second for an audio podcast produced with WKNC 88.1fm produced by Graham Bruns and Stephen Kinane

With the 2009-2009 academic and fiscal years behind us, it’s useful to look back at the progress we’ve made in certain areas and the areas we’ve identified for improvement. Financially, the NCSU Student Media is in solid shape. Although in the short-term, due to the declining economy, we’ve increased our dependence on student fees, the long-run we should be able to decrease that dependence. We had a solid year in recruitment and in recruiting a diverse array of students. We also increased the visibility of the program through active participation in the North Carolina College Media Association and other state, regional and national associations. CLICK HERE for the full report.

A total of 1,771 newspapers, magazines and yearbooks published during the 2007-2008 academic year were eligible for judging in the 2009 Crown Awards Program. Crown awards will be presented to 34 magazines, 54 newspapers and 44 yearbooks. Collegiate Crown Award finalists will be presented during the College Media Convention at the CSPA Award ceremony on March 15 at the Marriott Marquis in New York, N.Y.

This will be the second time the Windhover literary and arts magazine has received a national CSPA award. The 2007 edition received a Gold Crown Award. The 2004 Agromeck yearbook received N.C. State’s first national Crown award for any publication. The 2007 Agromeck yearbook received a Silver Crown Award. The fall 2005 and spring 2006 Technician newspapers both received Silver Crown awards.

Thirteen college magazines were nominated for Crown awards, including the magazines at East Carolina University and the University of North Carolina – Charlotte in North Carolina. The staff worked hard to work on the design as well as the printed and audio-visual content.”

Nine college yearbooks were nominated for Crown awards, none other than the Agromeck in North Carolina. Mary Beth Hamrick was the editor of the 2008 edition.
The Crown Awards are considered at Columbia by panels of invited judges, working in small groups to review each publication. During Crown consideration, publications are judged on their excellence as shown by their design, photography, concept, coverage and writing. Crown Awards summarize overall excellence in the entire publication and function as a “top-down” view of general excellence.

“While sales of the yearbook continue to decline, we have begun to consistently produce one of the best books in the nation,” said Wilson, also adviser to the yearbook. “I hope the students, faculty and staff will realize the value of this historical record and keep it alive. The yearbook is one of the first resources historians turn to when trying to get a reflection of the year.”

The NCSU Student Media Board of Directors hired top leaders for the 2009-2010 academic year this March.

AGROMECK — Bryant Robbins, a sophomore in business administration, is this year’s design editor and is on his second year on staff. He was the only applicant for the position. He is filling some big shoes with outgoing editor John Cooper Elias being a Matthews Medal recipient. The 2008 edition of the Agromeck yearbook received both a national Pacemaker and Crown award, national championships for college yearbooks. “After the past two great years the Agromeck has had under the leadership of Mary Beth Hamrick and John Cooper Elias,… it is now my time to step up to the plate and to lead the way to produce another great Agromeck.” design@agromeck.ncsu.edu

TECHNICIAN — Ty Johnson, a junior in history, is this year’s news editor and a former assistant sports editor. He joined the staff in the fall of 2008. “From the position of editor-in-chief, I would be able not only to affect the direction of a section, but of the entire organization as Student Media continues to evolve into a multimedia-driven, 24-hour news outlet.” Johnson will lead a staff of more than 100 reporters, designers and photographers and a budget, solely funded by advertising, of about $390,000. news@technicianonline.com.

WINDHOVER — Helen Dear, a senior in graphic design, is this year’s design editor of the literary and arts magazine. The 2009 edition which Helen helped to produce is due for distribution in mid-April. “By exposing a multitude of students to such a visual and literary expertise, Windhover gives to readers what I am lucky enough to experience on a daily basis. N.C. State students produce work that rarely reaches past the walls of studios or English classrooms, and Windhover is a perfect outlet for it.” editor@windhover.ncsu.edu

BUSINESS OFFICE — Laura Frey is a junior in parks, recreation and tourism management and currently a display ad sales representative. As business office manager, Laura will oversee the sales and marketing efforts of the $1 million Student Media operation. Charlie Weinfield was named as sales manager to directly coordinate the sales efforts. Frey said, “The knowledge and growth that I’ve gained in my current and previous positions with the Student Media Business Office, give me the confidence in knowing that I can lead and communicate effectively.” Phil Zachary, board member and president and chief operating officer of Raleigh-based Curtis Media Group, said that the talents of these two individuals will allow the Business Office to succeed in a declining economy in which all mass media outlets are struggling to survive.

WKNC 88.1FM — Mike Alston is a senior in civil engineering with a minor in business management. Mike joined the staff in the spring of 2008 and is now the local music director. “Under my leadership, WKNC will expand in influence, both on campus and in the Triangle community; we will become more marketable and be able to bring in more money for Student Money.” gm@wknc.org

NUBIAN MESSAGE — Demi Olubanwo is a junior majoring in communication with minors in journalism and film studies. Demi joined the staff in August of 2007 as a photgrapher. “There are many areas of the paper that are doing quite well right now and so my job would be to maintain those areas in their current state and improve them if possible.” He cited as areas he wanted to work on for improvement as circulation and awarenss of the paper campuswide as well as increasing staff training and the paper’s online presence.

In later spring student body elections, the Student Media had three referenda on the ballot. The first, to remove section 3.2 of the Constitution, was binding and passed

CHAPEL HILL – Bradley Wilson, coordinator of student media advising at N.C. State University, has been awarded the Kay Phillips Distinguished Service Award from the North Carolina Scholastic Media Association.

The award, named in honor of the first full-time director of the association, recognizes two individuals each year who have supported the state’s scholastic journalism association and its mission. Robin Sawyer, journalism teacher at First Flight High and former Dow Jones National High School Journalism Teacher of the Year, also received the 2008 Kay Phillips Award.

“Both of them display year after year true dedication to NCSMI. They bring great energy and passion for scholastic journalism,” said Monica Hill, director of the NCMSA.

Wilson was cited for his service as a summer workshop instructor and for his dedication to journalism education in the state.

Nominator Mark Harrison, journalism teacher at T.C. Roberson High in Asheville, wrote, “It is unreal how much this man has done for not only high school journalism, but also collegiate journalism as well. As anyone can tell by just talking to him or reading the manuals that N.C. State’s media puts out, you know he is top-notch when it comes to quality. But spend five minutes with him, and you will realize that his humor can make almost anything he teaches that much more real. His work with the (N.C. Scholastic Media) Institute has been so extensive, you almost forget that he is giving his time to be here. I honestly can’t think what it would be like without him. Add to all of this his work on national curriculum textbooks for journalism and you have an individual well beyond deserving of this award.”

In an article by Kesha Hudson published in “The Rush,” a workshop publication released on the last day of the summer workshop and produced by students at the workshop, Phyllis Cooper, newspaper adviser from A.C. Reynolds High School said, “Bradley, to me, has a rare gift. He is a genius with photography and technology and yet he has the ability to bring the information down to an elementary level so beginner photojournalists can benefit from his vast experience and knowledge.”

Phillips presented the award to Wilson during the closing awards brunch of the N.C. Scholastic Media Institute on June 21. Wilson had served as photography instructor for the Institute.

N.C. State’s student yearboook, the Agromeck, and its literary and arts magazine,Windhover, will be recognized with a Crown Award from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association this coming spring.

“This award indicates that your publication ranks among the best in student journalism,” said Edmund Sullivan, executive director of CSPA.

A total of 1,882 newspaper, magazines and yearbooks published during the 2006-2007 academic year were eligible in the 2008 Crown Awards program.

In March 2008, 32 magazines, 47 newspapers and 50 yearbooks will receive either a Gold or Silver Crown Award. This will be the first time the Windhover literary and arts magazine has received a national CSPA award. The 2004 Agromeck yearbook received N.C. State’s first national Crown award for any publication. The fall 2005 and spring 2006 Techniciannewspapers both received Silver Crown awards.

Twelve college magazines were nominated for Crown awards, none other than theWindhover in North Carolina. Lauren Gould was the editor of the 2007 edition. Other staff members included designers Libbi Levi, Paul Venuto, Joshua Smith and Becca Mayfield; Literary Editor Minori Sanchiz, Music Editor Joel Mikkelsen, readers Alison Harmon and Victoria Renz. The book was printed by Theo Davis Printing of Raleigh.

“The Windhover consistently ranks as one of the top publications in the nation,” said adviser Bradley Wilson. “The 2007 edition was spectacular not only in terms of its design, but in terms of its content. And how good it was became evident when they disappeared so fast during distribution. It’s an awesome magazine from cover to cover.”

Ten college yearbooks were nominated for Crown awards, again, none other than theAgromeck in North Carolina. Brandon Wright was the editor of the 2007 edition. Other senior staff members included Managing Editor Mary Beth Hamrick, Design Editor Mark Fenimore, Photo Editor William Alligood, Sports Editor John Cooper Elias, Greeks/Organizations Editor Melissa Patzwaldt, Marketing Manager Jamie Rochelle, Assistant Marketing Manager Jon Clemmons.

At the national convention of the Associated Collegiate Press, College Media Advisers and College Broadcasters, Inc. in Washington, D.C. Oct 25-28, the NCSU Student Media received national recognition and students attending the conference did everything from participate in critiques to teach sessions.

“I get really tired of people talking about how schools without journalism degrees cannot have successful student media programs,” media adviser Bradley Wilson said. “We’re living proof that when students want to achieve, they can. Our students in radio, yearbook, literary magazine and newspaper photography/design are regularly competing, and beating, schools with well-established journalism programs. These awards are just continued recognition of the quality work students at NCSU do online, in print and on the air.”

2007 Windhover wins Pacemaker
Places second in Best of Show

For the eleventh year, the Windhover literary and arts magazine received a Pacemaker. Since 1927, the Pacemaker has been the highest honor ACP gives to its members and is one of the two highest awards given nationally to college media.

The Windhover last won the award in for the 2005 edition. No other North Carolina school magazine received a Pacemaker although the Sanskrit from the University of North Carolina – Charlotte was a finalist. CLICK HERE for more information on the Pacemaker award winners.

The Associated Collegiate Press also selected the 2007 edition of N.C. State’s literary magazine, the Windhover, as second place in the Best of Show competition at the national convention ACP co-sponsors with the College Media Advisers. The Rebel from East Carolina University received an honorable mention in the same competition. For more information on the Best of Show winners, CLICK HERE.

Lauren Gould served as editor of the 2007 edition, an edition that was designed by Libby Levi, Paul Venuto, Joshua Smith and Becca Mayfield. Minori Sanchiz served as the literary editor and Joel Mikkelsenserved as the music editor. Alison Harman and Victoria Renz were readers.

Technician designer places first in newspaper page one design

In the national competition for individual designers, Katie Graf, former design editor for the Technician, placed first. No other North Carolina school placed in this category although students from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill did place in other individual categories.

“This design showed not only strong use of a dominant and creative visual, but good typography, and good use of alternative copy,” said Technicianadviser Bradley Wilson. It was a good page from top to bottom, and another good example of the quality work that the students are capable of when designers, reporters and photographers work together.”

In addition, Wilson said, “Graf certainly deserves the recognition, not only for her quality design work, but for her leadership on the staff.”

WKNC

WKNC was a finalist for the Best Station Promotion in the College Broadcasters national competition for promotion of the WKNC Double-Barrell Benefit. “It’s a token of gratitude for all of our promotions directors and staff responsible for coordianting the concert,” Kyle Robb, a junior in history and WKNC program director. “We need to be more creative and involve the student body more.” Brian Ware, former WKNC general manager and now an employee at Dick Broadcasting in Greensboro, Nicole Griffin, a senior in communication media, and Elizabeth Bridenstine, a senior in communication media, contributed to the contest entry.

88.1 Seconds of Technician podcast

A podcast collaboration between WKNC fm88.1 and the Technician that began broadcasting April 1, 2007 received a second place Best of Show Award, competing against other similar media at the convention. “It’s a very positive collaboration between the WKNC radio and the Technician,” said WKNC adviser Jamie Lynn Gilbert. “It took us a while to get this up and running, but it’s gotten off to a great start and shows how the media can work together to benefit each other.” The winning podcast was produced byPete Ellis, a senior in computer and electrical engineering. Brian Ware,Tyler Dukes, 2006-2007 Technician editor, and Rob Bradley were instrumental in getting “88.1 Seconds of Technician” on the air and online.

Third place, feature page • Technician staff

The Associated Collegiate Press selected the 2004 edition of N.C. State’s literary magazine, the Windhover, from 57 entries as one of five winners in the 2004 Magazine Pacemaker competition. This edition, affectionately known as “magazine in a box,” was edited byShawna Jones and designed by Will Hall. The Windhover has received the award nine other times, including for the 2003 edition.

The 2005 edition of the Windhover, edited by Brian Darragh and designed by Josh Gajownik, took home the Best of Show trophy, making it the top magazine at the Kansas City CMA/ACP convention.

In addition, for the first time, another N.C. State publication, the Agromeck, edited by Jaime Trivette, was, from 62 entries, one of five books to win a 2004 Yearbook Pacemaker. Other top staff members on the 2004 edition included Josh Bassett, designer; Austin Dowd, photo editor; Rob Bradley, Pete Ellis and Ray Black, photographers; and Erik Snyder and Adam Dunn, writers. The Agromeck is published by Taylor Publishing of Dallas, Texas.

The 2005 edition of the Agromeck, edited by Josh Bassett, placed fifth in the Best of Show competition.

Since 1927, the Pacemaker has been the highest honor ACP gives to its members.

“These are very special awards,” Bradley Wilson, adviser to both publications said. “It really puts both the mgazine and the yearbook at the very top of collegiate media.”

In addition, Wilson said, in addition to providing recognition for the quality of the work, it’s also recognition for the amount of time the students spend producing such quality publications.

“Awards are a way of recognizing quality work,” he said. “They enable us to compare how we’re doing to how our peers are doing. Our students spend so many hours up here documenting the history of the University on a daily, weekly or yearly basis, it’s great to see them recognized at the national level.”

The Rebel from East Carolina University (Ryan Strohl, editor; William Clutter, adviser) also won a Pacemaker in the magazine competition. No other North Carolina school won a Pacemaker in the yearbook competition.

In addition to the top publication awards given by the Associated Collegiate Press, ACP announced that two Technician designers won individual awards in the 2005 ACP Design of the Year competition co-sponsored by Adobe Systems.

Thushan Amarasiriwardena served as Technician co-editor during the 2003-2004 academic year and now is a content producer for Boston.com/The Boston Globe.

Patrick Clarke is now the managing editor of the Technician.

Thushan Amarasiriwardena, newspaper, page one, third place

Patrick Clarke, news page/spread, first place

Thushan Amarasiriwardena, illustration, first place

Other winners in the design competition are posted on the ACP Web site as are winners in the story, photo, reporter, cartooning and advertising competitions.
