Production Schedule
Three Days Out
Three days in advance all ads on page for final layout and proofing (business manager). No ads will be moved after this deadline. Advertisers will approve all changes to ads within a day. Editors responsible for putting on the white board slug lines for upcoming editions.
Feature pages begin production. Photo/art assignments not made previously made through the design/photo editors. Last call for illustrations or portraits.
Two Days Out
Two days in advance, all ads are in place and will not be moved. No new ads will be added.
Feature pages continue in production. Last call for photo/art assignments.
Day Before
On-call photographer responsible for late-breaking news assignments. On-call photographer’s name, contact information on white board.
noon All page 2 content due. Weather due. Police blotter due. Viewpoint page mug shots and quotes from students due. Letters edited and on server.
1-3 p.m. Page 2 and Viewpoint pages in production. Afternoon designer and copy editor edit this material and design these pages.
3 p.m. Classifieds and puzzles on inside back page with that page printed for final approval of ad staff.
4 p.m. Page 2 final layout printed for final editing paying close attention to the in-depth story caption of the feature photo.
4 p.m. Final budgets due: Each section editor (news, features, sports, viewpoint, photo and design) should submit items to be considered for inclusion in the next day’s paper. The budget line item should include who is the person to whom it is assigned, their contact information, approximate length or appropriate size, and other relevant information.
5 p.m. Page 2 sent to printer.
5 p.m. Viewpoint columns for the day after tomorrow are due
5 p.m. Final drafts of all non-breaking news stories, photos and art due. Content for 88.1 Seconds of Technician due.
5 p.m. Budget meeting begins. (Moving to 3:30 p.m. in spring semester)
5 – 5:15 p.m. Critique of previous day’s paper (writing coach, adviser, staff); complete critique form and give paper a “grade”
5:15 – 5:20 p.m. Discuss editorial topics for the week
5:20 – 5:25 p.m. Discuss editorial topic for tomorrow (Viewpoint editor); Editorial should be tied to a previously published news story or one going in the same edition; Viewpoint editor after consultation with other section editors, comes to budget meeting with a draft of the editorial
5:25 – 5:30 p.m. Discuss changes to tomorrow’s budget, “issues”
6:30 p.m. Editorial placed on page and viewpoint page printed for examination by staff
7 p.m. Viewpoint page sent to printer. Viewpoint content uploaded to Web site
8:45 p.m. Designers print pages regardless of completion state
9 p.m. TIME OUT All staff members take a 15-minute break to look over all pages currently in production giving feedback on content, design, editing, headlines, captions, etc. Each page should be initialed by five people who then accept responsibility for content, design, editing, etc.
9:30 p.m. Feature page(s) sent to printer; 88.1 Seconds of Technician produced; Feature content uploaded to Web site
10 p.m. Sports page sent to printer; 88.1 Seconds of Technician completed; Sports content uploaded to Web site
midnight News page(s) sent to printer; News content uploaded to Web site
Last Things
Before leaving for the night: Each section editor should submit a draft budget for the day after tomorrow. Brief line items describing who is working on what will be sufficient.
