WKNC to make program available as podcast

Jeff Horn, a senior in economics, started “Failure to Refrain,” a program centered on economics and its impact on politics, law, philosophy and other areas of interest, in the fall 2007 semester. Horn and his co-host Nathanael Snow, also a senior in economics, wanted a program that would increase the frequency and quality of public debates, both on the N.C. State campus and in Raleigh.

“We’re both inspired to share the science of economics and the lessons in decision-making we’ve learned from it with others,” Horn said of his and Snow’s desire to start “Failure to Refrain.” John Boyer, a sophomore in meteorology, joined the show as a newsreader in October.

“The VCR and now DVR have made it possible to watch a TV show whenever you want,” said Jamie Lynn Gilbert, WKNC station adviser. Podcasting is like a DVR for radio. Listeners subscribe to the podcast and have the show automatically downloaded onto their computer each week.

Failure to Refrain , which airs Wednesdays from 7-8 p.m., encourages a dialogue with its audience and often features listener call-ins. Recent discussion topics include immigration, recycling and global poverty.

WKNC and the Technician student newspaper also podcast the daily newscast “88.1 Seconds of Technician.”

Agromeck, Windhover to receive top national award

N.C. State’s student yearboook, the Agromeck, and its literary and arts magazine,Windhover, will be recognized with a Crown Award from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association this coming spring.

“This award indicates that your publication ranks among the best in student journalism,” said Edmund Sullivan, executive director of CSPA.

A total of 1,882 newspaper, magazines and yearbooks published during the 2006-2007 academic year were eligible in the 2008 Crown Awards program.

In March 2008, 32 magazines, 47 newspapers and 50 yearbooks will receive either a Gold or Silver Crown Award. This will be the first time the Windhover literary and arts magazine has received a national CSPA award. The 2004 Agromeck yearbook received N.C. State’s first national Crown award for any publication. The fall 2005 and spring 2006 Techniciannewspapers both received Silver Crown awards.

Twelve college magazines were nominated for Crown awards, none other than theWindhover in North Carolina. Lauren Gould was the editor of the 2007 edition. Other staff members included designers Libbi Levi, Paul Venuto, Joshua Smith and Becca Mayfield; Literary Editor Minori Sanchiz, Music Editor Joel Mikkelsen, readers Alison Harmon and Victoria Renz. The book was printed by Theo Davis Printing of Raleigh.

“The Windhover consistently ranks as one of the top publications in the nation,” said adviser Bradley Wilson. “The 2007 edition was spectacular not only in terms of its design, but in terms of its content. And how good it was became evident when they disappeared so fast during distribution. It’s an awesome magazine from cover to cover.”

Other senior staff members included Managing Editor Mary Beth Hamrick, Design Editor Mark Fenimore, Photo Editor William Alligood, Sports Editor John Cooper Elias, Greeks/Organizations Editor Melissa Patzwaldt, Marketing Manager Jamie Rochelle, Assistant Marketing Manager Jon Clemmons. The Crown Awards are considered at Columbia by panels of invited judges, working in small groups to review each publication. During Crown consideration, publications are judged on their excellence as shown by their design, photography, concept, coverage and writing. Crown Awards summarize overall excellence in the entire publication and function as a “top-down” view of general excellence.

“While sales of the yearbook continue to decline, we have begun to consistently produce one of the best books in the nation,” said Wilson, also adviser to the yearbook. “I hope the students, faculty and staff will realize the value of this historical record and keep it alive. The yearbook is one of the first resources historians turn to when trying to get a reflection of the year.”

Agromeck, Windhover to receive top national award

In addition, WKNC was a finalist in a national competition and the Technician podcast broadcast on WKNC received recognition

At the national convention of the Associated Collegiate Press, College Media Advisers and College Broadcasters, Inc. in Washington, D.C. Oct 25-28, the NCSU Student Media received national recognition and students attending the conference did everything from participate in critiques to teach sessions.

“I get really tired of people talking about how schools without journalism degrees cannot have successful student media programs,” media adviser Bradley Wilson said. “We’re living proof that when students want to achieve, they can. Our students in radio, yearbook, literary magazine and newspaper photography/design are regularly competing, and beating, schools with well-established journalism programs. These awards are just continued recognition of the quality work students at NCSU do online, in print and on the air.”

Technician receives Silver Crown; Agromeck staffers receive national recognition

Technician

N.C. State’s daily student newspaper, the Technician, received a Silver Crown, the second highest national award, from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association at the CSPA convention March 17.

“This award indicates that your publication ranks among the best in student journalism,” said Edmund Sullivan, executive director of CSPA.

Rebecca Heslin edited the newspaper. She is now a associate editor at DC Magazine magazine in Washingon, D.C.

Eleven college newspapers were nominated for Crown awards. Three received Gold Crown awards. Eight received Silver Crown awards. The Technician was the only North Carolina collegiate publication of any kind to be named a finalist. It received a Silver Crown for both the fall 2005 and spring 2006 editions.

This is only the second time an NCSU publication has received one of the top national awards. The 2004 Agromeckyearbook received a Silver Crown for the 2004 edition. The Gold Crown award, given since 1982, represents the top 2 percent of media in the nation. A total of 1,860 newspapers, magazines and yearbooks published during the 2005-2006 academic year were eligible for judging in the 2007 Crown Awards Program.

“We’ve taken great strides in the past few years to make the paper more readable and to make it appeal to a wider audience,” said Bradley Wilson, adviser to the newspaper. “Localization of national news, inclusion of feature stories on a regular basis, alternative copy and a modern look help make the paper serve the campus better. I’m glad the judges recognize the hard work the students have been doing.”

As part of their initiation, the students will pledge to:

  1. “Gather all pertinent news and opinions concerning issues and events on the campus, striving at all times for accuracy and fairness.
  2. “Safeguard the freedom of all campus media in order that they be able to serve the campus community without
    dictation, coercion, or restraint.”

The five NCSU students inducted will be:

  • Channon Smith, program director, WKNC;
  • Brian Ware, general manager, WKNC;
  • Saja Hindi, deputy news editor, Technician;
  • Kathryn Parker, features editor, Technician; and
  • Yasmin Sadiq, account representative, Student Media business office.
