NCSU students receive state-wide recognition

At the fourth-annual statewide convention of the North Carolina College Media Association 13 individual N.C. State students received awards and three media outlets placed in the Best of Show competition.

  • Individual staff members of the Technician daily newspaper received seven awards in everything from opinion writing to design. The Technician received Best of Show recognition for both the print edition and the online edition.
  • The Windhover also received Best of Show recognition, as did three other literary magazines statewide, and three students who submitted work for the magazine received recognition.
  • The Agromeck yearbook received recognition in every category and also placed in the Best of Show competition.

About 140 students from all over the state attended the conference that was first held at UNC-Chapel Hill, then NCSU followed last year by Elon University. NCSU adviser Bradley Wilson has served as chair of the steering committee that created the association and coordinated events, including the awards program started last year, since the organization’s inception.

Agromeck named finalist for second national award

The Associated Collegiate Press named the 2010 Agromeck yearbook edited by Bryant Robbins and Michele Chandler a finalist for its top award — the Pacemaker.

“It’s an honor to be named a finalist. It’s nice to see that the recognition for all the hard work that we put into the book,” Robbins said. “It’s nice to be recognized at a national level, but it’s also nice to know we’re doing our job right. It’s also helpful to see the campus recognize the quality of the book and how we work hard to document the history of the University.”

The NCSU yearbook was one of 11 finalists for the national award it also received in 2009, 2008, 2007 and 2004 and was a finalist in 2006.

The Pacemaker winners will be announced for the first time at the fall ACP/CMA National College Media Convention in Orlando, Oct. 26-31.

Produced by the NCSU Student Media as a collaborative effort with Student Government, the Alumni Association and the First Year College, The Brick is a handbook of current traditions at North Carolina State University. Incoming freshmen received copies through their college. But we’re all out. So students who didn’t get a copy can view this copy online.

The Brick is interactive in nature. Students who complete the interactive portions of the publication and present it for certification in the spring will win prizes such as a free yearbook and other prizes. Freshmen should watch for ads in the spring to claim their prizes.

What we learned in Louisville

Each year, the NCSU Student Media sends a handful of students to the national college media convention of the College Media Advisers, College Broadcasters and Associated Collegiate Press. While it’s fun to receive national awards, this is primarily an educational endeavor. This year, four students attended, along with advisers Bradley Wilson and Jamie Lynn Gilbert.

  • Marisa Akers, Agromeck photo editor and Student Media photographer
  • Alex Sanchez, Student Media photographer (who also assisted running the on-site photo contest and teaching the pre-conference workshop)
  • Susannah Brinkley, Agromeck editor
  • Kieran Moreira, WKNC program director

Jamie Lynn Gilbert serves as the secretary of the College Broadcasters and attended the CBI Board meeting to assist with planning of future events. Bradley Wilson is co-chair of the photojournalism committee for the College Media advisers. In that capacity, he coordinates all the photojournalism sessions at the two national conventions each year. He also teaches the pre-conference workshop in Photoshop.

Each of the students writes a short summary of the sessions they attended so that other students at NCSU can learn from the conference as well. Below are those summaries.

WKNC students named finalist for national awards

College Broadcasters, Inc. announced students at WKNC 88.1 FM are finalists in three categories in its annual national student production awards.

Mike Alston and Kelly Reid, on the air as DJ Mick and Mz. Kelly, are one of four finalists in the Best DJ category. Alston, who graduated in May, served as the station’s general manager for the 2009-2010 academic year. Reid earned her second bachelor’s in chemistry in August 2010 while she worked as the station’s head music director. Reid was previously named a finalist for Best Radio DJ in Independent Weekly’s 2009 Best in the Triangle reader’s poll.

Alston is also recognized in the Best Regularly Scheduled Program category for “First Friday,” a segment aired Nov. 9, 2009 on WKNC’s public affairs program, Eye on the Triangle. The piece, voiced and produced by Alston, was a profile of downtown Raleigh’s monthly First Friday art showcase. It was also included in Eye on the Triangle’s “Best of” program in May 2010.

WKNC took a second finalist award in Best Regularly Scheduled Program for “Musicology: Americana.” Hosted by Matt Gossett, a sophomore in film studies, Musicology was an hour-long look at a specific musical genre, time period or artist and aired in the spring 2010 semester. Caitlin Cauley, a senior in English and host of WKNC’s Americana, Blues and Company, joined Gossett on the program to discuss and listen to Americana. Cauley and former Americana co-host Steve McCreery were honored as finalists for Best Radio DJ from CBI in 2008.

The station’s fourth finalist nod is for Best Student Media website for wknc.org. This category was open to student radio and television stations, while the other awards were exclusively for radio.

The winners will be announced at the National College Media Convention Oct. 29. 2010 in Louisville, Ky.

Wolf TV clip on ABC’s ‘Nightline’

ABC Nightline’s “Sign of the Times” feature on Silly Bandz last week included WolfTV‘s “Silly Bandz Gangster Rap” among its YouTube tributes. The video was produced by Wolf TV Station Manager Caleb Van Voorhis.

“I just produced the video for fun,” Van Voorhis said. “I never knew it was going to blow up the way that it did. My little sister had a lot of Silly Bandz and I thought they were interesting so I made a song about them.”

  • Watch the Nightline piece here.

ABC’s Nightline is a late-night television news program featuring anchors Cynthia McFadden, Terry Moran and Bill Weir.

“Nightline used it because it is the biggest Silly Bandz video on Silly Bandz,” Van Voorhis, a sophomore in Communication Media, said. “It’s the first thing that comes up when you type in Silly Bandz. It has more than 400,000 views.”
  • And catch the whole video from Wolf TV here.
“It is special because it is so catchy,” Van Voorhis said. “And I beat everyone to the chase. When I uploaded it nobody knew what Silly Bandz were so it was the only Silly Bandz video on Silly Bandz.  Then it just got bigger and bigger.”
