Free Tax Assistance (UPDATE THIS IS TOTALLY OUTDATED)

The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) will be providing free tax assistance to low and middle income individuals and the elderly who need assistance in the preparation of their 2004 Federal and North Carolina Income tax forms. Tax-Aid is provided by volunteer tax counselors who are trained by the IRS. Tax-Aid can be obtained between February 1, 2005 and April 15, 2005 at the sites listed below. Those requesting help will be assisted on a first come, first serve basis. Persons seeking help should bring the following items with them:

• Photo Identification
• Social Security Cards for you, your spouse and dependants
• Birth Dates for primary, secondary and dependants on the tax return
• A copy of the 2004 federal and State tax forms
• A copy of your 2003 State and Federal tax returns
• Wage and Earning statement(s) Forms W-2, W-2G, 1099-R, from all employers
• Interest and Dividend statement from banks (Forms 1099)
• Bank Routing Numbers for direct deposit
• A list of deductions and expenses i.e. Day Care Payments
• Other pertinent information.

To file electronically on a married filing jointly return, both spouses must be present to sign the required forms.

Tax Forms

Basic federal and state tax forms can be downloaded from the IRS website. These forms are sometimes available at the first floor of the D.H. Hill Library's East Wing. Additional tax forms are sometimes available at the reference desk at the D.H. Hill Library in a reproducible set, which you can pay to have photocopied. Free federal tax forms are also available at the IRS office at 4405 Bland Road. Tax returns can be filed free of charge electronically at this location. You can also order federal tax forms by calling 1(800) 829-3676. State income tax forms can be obtained by mail from the NC Department of Revenue by calling 715-0397.

Directions to the IRS office from campus

Take I-440 East. Take Exit 10, the Wake Forest Road exit. At the end of the exit, turn left. Head north on Wake Forest Road. You will pass the North Raleigh Hilton and the Raleigh Community Hospital. At the fifth stoplight (not counting the stoplight at the end of the Wake Forest Road exit) turn left onto Hardimont Road. Just past the Wendy's restaurant, you will turn right onto Bland Road. Turn left at the second entrance to Sommerset Industrial Park. The IRS is located in the last building on the right, building 4405. The IRS office is open Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.
