What Are Podcasts?

Podcasts are audio recordings that you can listen to through your computer or through an mp3 player. These audio recordings are used for several purposes. Many podcasts are for entertainment, and others are for informational and educational purposes.

The ability to put an audio file on the web and make it available for others to listen or download has been around for awhile. Podcasting takes it one step further by letting you subscribe to a series of audio files and automatically download them onto a digital audio player (like an iPod, hence the name). A good example is radio. Many popular radio shows are available as podcasts. Anytime you connect your mp3 player to your computer and launch the music software (like iTunes), the latest broadcast of that show is downloaded to your player, ready to enjoy at your convenience. Podcasting is a generic term and iPods are not required; just about any digital audio player will work.
Why is Student Affairs Creating Podcasts?

Podcasts are a very popular medium used by students for both entertainment, and education. In keeping with our motto of "Students First," our Division is utilizing this technology as a means to provide information to students. We also will offer podcasts that will be of interest to various staff and faculty on campus.
