David Genereux, professor in the Department of Marine, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences (MEAS) at North Carolina State University, has been named associate director for research of the Water Resources Research Institute (WRRI) of The University of North Carolina.

As associate director for research, Genereux will assist the director in the management of WRRI’s statewide research program, which will include interacting with the WRRI Advisory Committee, managing the annual request for proposals (including proposal review and award decisions), advising prospective investigators, reviewing final reports, and advancing technology transfer.

"We are delighted that David was willing and available to assume these important duties at WRRI. His training and background will serve both him and the Institute very well,” said Michael Voiland, director of WRRI. “His refined understanding of ground and surface water hydrology will assist WRRI greatly in all its functions, from making our funding investments and developing research collaborations, to reviewing, interpreting and extending study findings."

Genereux received a bachelor's degree in geology and chemistry from the University of Delaware. He earned a master’s degree in civil engineering and a doctorate in hydrology both from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Genereux began his career as a postdoctoral research associate at MIT’s Department of Civil Engineering. In 1992, Genereux was hired as an assistant professor, and in 1997 became associate professor, in the Geology Department at Florida International University (FIU) in Miami. At FIU he had joint appointments between Geology and two research centers , the Drinking Water Research Center (1992-1997) and the Southeast Environmental Research Center (1997-2000).

In 2000, Genereux came to NC State University’s Department of Marine, Earth, and Atmospheric Sciences. His research focuses on the interaction of groundwater and surface water, watershed hydrology, and chemical/isotope hydrology, and has been funded by the National Science Foundation, U.S. Department of Agriculture, and other sources. He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in hydrogeology in MEAS. He has served as associate editor for Water Resources Research and the Journal of Contaminant Hydrology, and has served on grant program panels at the National Science Foundation, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Located at North Carolina State University, WRRI is one of 54 state water institutes that were authorized by the Water Resources Research Act of 1964 to administer and promote federal/state partnerships in research and information transfer on water-related issues. The mission of WRRI is threefold:

  • to identify the state's ever-changing research needs,
  • to motivate and support research by qualified scientists, and
  • to provide for technology transfer.
