Research Summary

Hans Hallen is a leader in the study of new physics in nanoscale optical
spectroscopy. He has active projects in nanoscale characterization, in-plane oriented
molecular deposition with nanoscale lateral resolution, and novel nanoscale material
and electromagnetic modeling approaches for 3-D packaging of RF wafers. He has
been a leader in the development and use of several probe methods (BEEM, Hall
probe, NSOM), and has taught many short courses and tutorials on this subject. His
contributions to the NSOM field to date have centered upon (i) spectroscopy, (ii) the
effects of strong electric field variation near metallic nanostructures, (iii)
electromigration in granular materials, (iv) time-resolved contrast, and (v) studies of
the probe.
